Scott Frost wasn't finishing his Christmas shopping on Sunday night.
UCF's new head coach was making recruiting calls, at least one of which was to Frostproof (Fla.) offensive lineman Michael Smith. The 6-foot-3, 280-pounder reported that Frost gave him an offer.
"He told me that he likes what I can do with my athleticism and what I bring to the table because they're running the same offense he ran at Oregon," Smith said.
Smith visited Iowa State last month and has a few more visits scheduled for January, including Middle Tennessee (Jan. 15) and FIU (Jan. 22).
Frost encouraged him to keep a date open for UCF and said they'd be in touch soon with more details about setting up a trip. Smith indicated he could even visit unofficially as soon as the dead period lifts because of the close proximity.
"I like that UCF is close to home and my family could come and see me play," Smith said.
UCF, MTSU, FIU and UMass would consist of this top schools at this point. He committed to Georgia Southern last summer and then to Iowa State following his visit, but backed off the Cyclones' pledge after ISU parted ways with former coach Paul Rhoads.
"I don't have any order or favorite right now," he said.
