They use the term "winning the press conference," but since that hasn't happened yet I think it's fair to say UCF won the Twittersphere on Tuesday. Out of nowhere, Scott Frost emerged as John Hitt and Danny White's pick for new head coach, a move that was met with widespread praise from national media.
It was a surprise to me. I was uncovering bits and pieces of the possible offer issued to Greg Schiano on Sunday and early Monday but later that night I was getting vibes from key people that UCF was on the verge of making a splash hire of a candidate never publicly linked to the search.
I haven't yet been filled in on the process that led to Frost entering the picture, though I'm sure we'll hear more about that tomorrow.
As I posted earlier, I'm hearing Frost's UCF contract will be in the "GOL range." I don't think it's $2M base, but could get there with bonuses. That was the buzz. We'll know for sure tomorrow as UCF is now releasing contracts of all new hires.
Here's the really interesting information coming out of Tuesday night's Meet & Greet at the UCF Doubletree - Frost was initially offered a higher base contract, but he asked UCF to lower that figure in order to shift more money into the assistants' salary pool.
Frost's first interview will be on Mike Bianchi's radio show at 8:35. I am curious how he handles Bianchi's famous opening zingers, Danny White didn't seem to think that was coming when he had him on.
The introductory press conference will begin at 9:30. The school will stream it live via All-Access and the Orlando Sentinel will also have it via Youtube (which will probably work better if you're on mobile).
As was posted in the other thread, Scott Frost has followed two people on Twitter since the hire: AD Danny White was the first. The second? Rivals100 QB Feleipe Franks, brother of WR Jordan Franks. The No. 3 dual-threat QB and four-star was a longtime commit to LSU and decommitted recently, flipping to Florida after a visit there this past weekend. But Florida isn't done recruiting QBs. Jacob Eason, the nation's No. 1 QB and a five-star, currently is on a visit to UF. He was a longtime commit to Georgia but is now looking around since Mark Richt was forced out. LSU also is attempting to woo Franks back into the fold.
For the record, Feleipe followed Frost first, shortly after the hire was announced. It's not to hard to connect the dots that Frost may make Franks his first UCF recruiting target. That would be a hell of a prize to build your future offense around not to mention a huge spark for this recruiting class. He's an early enrollee too and could be here for spring practice.
Speaking of recruiting, I don't think Frost will have any problem at all. There are plenty of players that will give UCF a strong look, even if they are committed elsewhere.
The thing I'm most intrigued about is the coaching staff. We don't have any verified names, but there are two rumors circulating. One is Steve Spurrier Jr. I heard his name as a potential hire and that was before SOS Jr. followed Frost on Twitter today. The other rumor is former Oregon QB and current grad assistant Nate Costa. I'm hearing he could factor into the staff.
Frost is very close with Oregon passing game coordinator/WR coach Matt Lubick, but he seems be a lock for a promotion to Oregon's offensive coordinator. He also is already getting paid $325,000. It's hard to see UCF competing with that unless there was a serious bump in salary pool.
I believe Frost will be meeting with the team after the press conference. And I'm sure we might learn of some staff decisions, who might stay and who may be let go.
Tomorrow will be busy again, that's for sure!
