UCF's offense is still very much a work in progress in 2022, and I think it was a bit unfair that some fans put such high expectations (so early) on a unit with so many new faces. Plumlee needs a lot of work still to reacclimate to the position, the line is breaking in two new tackles. But for me, the most negligent thing that has happened on offense so far this season has been the relatively minimal usage of Johnny Richardson.
In his career at UCF, he's touched the ball on offense 154 times - and has produced 1,174 yards. That's nearly eight yards EVERY TIME he gets involved in the offense. Yet this season, he's only rushed the ball 10 times, and has four catches (through two games). That is just plain unnacceptable.
Right now, there's really only two guys on the roster who can take it to the house and break a game open at any moment, and one of them (O'Keefe) may be out. Malzhan and company MUST make a much more concerted effort to get Richardson 15+ touches per game. Slow screens, jet sweeps (lined up in the slot), quick screens, wheel routes out of the backfield (matched-up against LB's), shoot/arrow routes out of the backfield, misdirection plays (like what we saw Friday, which was beautifully desgined), designed runs off tackle, etc.
Obviously, Bowser is going to get his touches. And those runs are valubale to loosen up the defense, wear on them, and soften them up later in the game. But UCF also must feature one of the more underrated (and unknown) talents in college football before it's too late (this season and beyond).
