Google to release censored search engine in China

In a leaked document, plans have come out that Google plans to release a censored version of itself for use in China code named Dragonfly. Topics such as democracy, human rights, religion, sex, and others will be blocked. Google, which currently does not operate in China, is caving to the authoritarian demands of Xi Jingping’s government.

To me, this is complete bs.

Nothing different than what the other tech giants have done. Speak a big game here about human rights, inclusion, free and open dialogue - and then get on a plane to China to bow to their Communist leaders and actively assist their in implementing their policies.

These companies are totally beholden to the Communist Party and a country that actively steals from us and rips off our workers.

And now a Chinese dissident and critic of the government was literally kidnapped during the middle of an interview with an American funded free speech organization. He hasn't been seen or heard of since and no one can reach him.

As he was carried away by Chinese authorities, Wenguang Sun could only say: “I am entitled to freedom of speech.”

The retired Chinese professor and activist was being interviewed by U.S.-funded Voice of America when police officers burst through the door of his apartment. Sun was criticizing Chinese leader Xi Jingping’s billion-dollar investment in African infrastructure, arguing that Xi had ignored the poor in his own country.

Viewers listened as Sun recounted his ordeal live on air. “Here they come again, the police are here to interrupt again,” Sun said in Chinese. “Four, five, six of them.”

Sun asked what the men were doing in his home and threatened to get a knife. “It is illegal for you to come to my home,” he said. He defended his VOA interview and called on the security officials to respect his rights.

Then the line went dead.

the freedom of speech only exists in the united states of america. no other country has it. it is very sad more havent adopted it.

not that i like any of their stuff, but infowars has been banned by facebook, youtube, apple, spotify and these companies are happy to do so. its crazy that american companies are happy to censor its users.

Meh. He’s free to keep on saying and believing what he wants. It’s just these companies and platforms aren’t going to act as a megaphone to his views. It’s not the same as pure censorship like what’s going on in China. People will still be able to find Alex Jones if they want if they search for him. He won’t be completely blocked like certain topics on Google in China.

Alex Jones is a wackjob who sells insanity (although he can be hilarious).

As far as I can tell, there are no Alex Jones hit squads running around the country, beating up people they disagree with and vandalizing private property.

Meanwhile, Antifa has no less than 30-40 active Facebook groups, with the main one containing 15,000 users.

But yes, Facebook is totally concerned about not allowing dangerous material to be pushed on their platform. :flush:

yes but american companies should have american values. they should value free speech. im not a fan of censorship in general.

All of the recent division and strife boils down to a battle over redefining America’s common values. This is exactly what Obama had in mind when he said he was going to fundamentally transform America. Now we are in the deep end and all that remains is how they are going to look at the end.
