He's Gone, Now What?

I’m expecting next year to potentially be worse than this year. Losing a crap ton of seniors, recruits are flying off the shelves, and guys are hitting the portal because Gus is gone. Whoever comes here has to come quick and hit the ground running

This move is a two year effect. Team gets dismantled and then made whole again with new regime. It's probably gonna suck for at least next year unless we get a miracle, then but then we already got one.

the portal giveth and taketh. it's possible for new coaches to field highly competitive teams in their first year with high roster turnover. look at indiana and arizona state.

Our new coach may have to dip into the transfer portal for 2025, however I would like to have more emphasis on high school recruiting and player development. Hopefully, our new coach will hire a good coaching staff.
I believe UCF had the worst group of assistant coaches in all of college football. Former DC Ted Roof was a disaster and was just collecting a paycheck.

Keep things in perspective. How has the program fared under Gus? Not exactly a model others will be emulating. We go 4-7 next year while trying to rebuild a failing system? No worse than the last two years. We need to hire a young progressive, aggressive coach that truly wants to build a national contender. It needs to be someone who players can actually relate to. Administration needs to decide whether we are going to try to be a player or just a team for the players to play.

I’ll wait until new hire is announced. Then I’ll see if they are trying to win or just save face for a year b

That is how it used to work. Teams can improve dramatically in one off season now. As bad as this season was it was all the result of making one bad decision, KJ.

Everything fell apart because of that decision. Wasted WR talent, one dimensional offense, extra pressure on an average defense etc etc

We can get back on track quickly.

To be fair, it took Arizona State two years. Technically they used the portal in one year to bring in their core offensive players, but K. Dillingham is in year two with the Sun Devils program (went 3-9 in 2023).

Would everybody agree the Tulane HC should be on the short list?

Chadwell? Seems like he was exposed this year......

Kinne? His team also wasn't great this year.

Jamey Chadwell, Barry Odom, Jon Sumrall, GJ Kinne, Will Stein, Joey Halzle, Garrett Riley, & Scott Frost seem to be the names most being talked about.

ahh i thought he was new because of how they were talking about 50 new players and stuff. so he adjusted after year 1.

i don't think you can rely on bringing in a bunch of freshmen and develop them into winners by year 3 because your best freshmen and sophomores are going to abandon ship if they aren't playing AND winning. you need a good ready to go core that you can supplement with some top high schoolers.

Found this article by Craig Meyer, USA TODAY NETWORK, to be interesting:
In the same way that schools owe coaches money guaranteed to them based on the terms of their contract if they’re fired without cause, coaches (or, more commonly, the schools hiring them) have to pay their employer if they leave before their contract ends. Malzahn is no exception. If Malzahn terminated his deal with UCF before June 30, 2025, he owes the university $6 million, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY through an open records request.
