Those that support GOL likely either falls into one of two camps.
- This is 2004 all over again. UCF will repeat 2005 and win the division.
- I rather stick it out with a known quantity in GOL, don't want to start a coaching carousel as experienced in USF.
However, this is not 2004 and while the AAC is not a strong conference it is not nearly as weak as CUSA in 2005. The lone highlight OOC win for CUSA - East in 2005 was a win over a (1-10) Duke. This year AAC - East has beaten Penn State, Miami, Virgina Tech, and Syracuse. Not marquee wins, but substantially better than CUSA. Much of the AAC East will be returning their biggest playmakers, a lot of juniors and younger.
UCF will improve, I mean it has to, they are last. However, as this season has progressed the players this year has not improved. To think they will be a strong winning team in a competitive conference in 1 year from now is a stretch. At best people should hope for a a bowl. Now maybe in 2017 you are looking at a team that could compete for the division, but thats only basing on hopes that the current players that are struggling signficantly pan out. Just because you have a player start 20+ games, doesn't mean he's an elite player.
As for avoiding a coaching carousel situation, in 5 years a new coach will be needed regardless. Right now no one is confident in anyone on the staff stepping up to take over. Recruiting is difficult now, its going to be interesting to see how well GOL staff can recruit as his tenure comes to a close. In the last few years they need to prove that the program will be in as good or better hands when GOL leaves.
