If I hear another long boring talk about Orlando City Soccer, why

I'll just stomp up and down!

Our season is about to start and all I hear on 740 is ORLANDO CITY...ORLANDO CITY.....!! The Slant is ORLANDO CITY ORLANDO CITY.

For me as a 28 year dedicated UCF fan (and Alum), I feel that we can't get enough community buy-in because of our lack of local media support!

Our home games should be packed, like... (dare I say) Orlando City!!!

WTF!

I need some feedback on this topic! :) Thoughts? Comments?

People in Orlando either already have ties to whatever University they attended, or they have no interest in keeping tabs on a G5 program. I can only imagine that would improve if UCF gets the bump into the P5. Until then, the community support is probably not going to grow far beyond where it already is. If more people start demanding more coverage in the future, the media outlets will be forced to respond.

Orlando media needs something to report on. The Magic suck and are boring nowadays. Orlando City soccer is new and semi-exciting. Except now they are not winning and half their star players are being called up for international play. Which is lame in my opinion. But, hopefully with the start of football season the coverage leans more to UCF. Why wouldn't they? There are many UCF students and alumni in the area. Why they don't is beyond me. I think they are missing an opportunity. But, I'm just an engineer and not journalist/marketeer.

Chill son. Closed practices didn't really help the hype. Interestingly, the Thanksgiving game made the local TV news and Orlando Sentinel. Once the season gets started, I wouldn't be surprised if "college football" flooded the media and we'd hear less soccer news. Think about it.. besides baseball.. it is a really slow sports time right now. Every one is anxious for football to start.

Coverage of UCF football will pick up as the season opener draws closer. Still, though, it's true that the media (not just the media, but the entire Orlando area and other parts of the state) doesn't devote enough loyalty to UCF athletics, IMO. We have diehard fans, but I don't think we attract enough of the non-diehards the way UF and FSU do. I think things will change, though. We may not surpass UF and FSU in fan support, but our fanbase will grow. It already has grown significantly from what it was back when we were in Division 1-AA and our early years in 1-A.

We are still a relatively young program who gains attention by anything noteworthy like 2013 for example. Lets be fair the original three of our state took the same blows. Where i was raised Georgia and Florida was the dominant fanbase...teams like FSU and Miami didnt make a dent where i was raised until they started winning big time. Years later you see the fruits of their labor.
UCF football has opportunities against Stanford on national television (FS1) and South Carolina to make some noise. If we fail we have the Thanksgiving game against the Bulls. Hopefully both teams can solidify the I4 corridor fanbase by then

Most of the fans don't go to actually watch the games...for most its a novelty. tell everyone they were there. Others have backs to game and worry more about the chanting and singing than what is happening on field. I would rather be sitting in half empty stadium than next to people who aren't watching the game. Just go to family weekend and you can see that.

ESPN and USA Today have statistics that disagree with you ... and the local media.

UCF is one of the very few G5 programs that are #1 in their market. Unfortunately the Orlando media still doesn't believe this ... so they'll only continue to hurt their own bottom line.

That said ... Orlando City is #1 among all sports programs in Orlando. UCF is #2, which #3 being a debate among other college teams v. the Magic. So you do have to recognize the Orlando City does have more fans than UCF, in Orlando.

So ... the best way to market UCF is to become an Orlando City fan, and reach out to others to root for "the other, #1 team" in Orlando.

Yes ... the Gators, Seminoles and, definitely, the Hurricanes are not more popular. That is a literal [Orlando] urban myth that has not been true for at least 5 years now. And, again, it will continue to hurt the local Orlando media's bottom line.

I thought the recent USA Today articles on this matter provided even more backing to the prior articles from ESPN. But I guess not.

you're basing the rankings based on a poll or tv ratings?

What's your theory for why the media doesn't deploy more extensive coverage of the program? Conspiracy to keep UCF down? They don't want to make more money? They are just too stupid to realize an opportunity?

Unintentional bias.

UCF was just a commuter school 15 years ago, little money 10 years ago, and had not even established itself as a persistent, G5 power 5 years ago. Our football program is barely 35 years old, and we've only been open less than 50.

So we have a very, very young fanbase, most still growing into their prime income earning years, as well as growing in general at a major pace -- but not established more than 10 years. So the media is filled with not just Alumni of other schools, but non-UCF Alumni who rooted for Florida, Florida State and, less and less, Miami the past 25 years.

I thought after 5 years of constantly improving TV viewership, as well as UCF being the #1 undergrad school -- including housing -- for the last decade, would start to change that. But it hasn't. In fact, we're now, just finally in the 3rd phase of Ghandi's famous [mis-]quote.

- First they ignore you (20th century)
- Then they laugh at you ('00s)
- Then they fight you ('10s)
- Then you win ('20s?)

They ignored us for the longest time.
Then they laughed at us ... especially when GoL came in and went 0-11.
I had a lot of conversations on flights or elsewhere that it had become laughter, instead of just ignoring us.

But in'10 and, even more so, '13, it really became different.
People weren't just ignoring UCF ... they were actively downplaying everything UCF did ... again, actively, without being prompted.
It's really thick now ... no longer the snide comments like before (or even after) the Baylor game, but actively insulting.

The Orlando Sentinel is going to close its doors soon if they don't change their attitude.
The Orlando City coverage is probably the only thing saving them right now.
Because sports is big business.

It's not coincidence one of their lowest subscription bases is 3765-32766, which are the #1 zipcodes for UCF Football season tickets.
Even my neighbors ask me why I still subscribe.

18,000 season tickets sold in 18 days. UCF is so losing in the marketing department. Maybe UCF should give away free magnets.

Nice write up UCFBS....I agree. I guess I want to know HOW we are going to get the surrounding communities of football fans into our stadium. :) bobbleheads? Price? Tee-shirts? Beach Bars? Mall atmosphere? Disney Characters?...gotta be something! :) Let me edit this a bit....we need BEER! :)

Marv....you know that stadium will be 1/2 empty this season on some games :)

Exactly. We did it to ourselves when we closed practices.

If you post this stupid shit again I'm literally going to find you and kick your ass. Stfu already. You are like the worst UCF fan.

Who is forcing you to listen to 740 am?

Marc Daniels has a 3 hour show every day on 740 am (9 am - Noon), and probably 95% of the time (or more) he is not talking about OC (but has when a topic has been relevant).

I realize times have changed...but as the old saying use to go "change the dial", its ok.

PS. Even DURING the season, you will find very little "intelligent" discussion regarding UCF Football (Mike Tuck on 1080? Nope....Shot Doctor on 740? Nope....Bianchi, outside of trolling? Nope) so better get over the disappointment now.

KL, you're correct. I keep asking myself "why do I listen to 740", especially with the idiot SHOT DOCTOR...my gosh! Can't find any UCF Football radio talk.
