I'm sick of Donnie Jones' and our basketball's offense

After last knight's game, I have finally had enough with our lack of offense. I'm so sick of it that I'm not even going to write out a diatribe. I will list some key facts that pertain to all the UCF teams' offense under Donnie Jones.

  • Expecting one player to drive with hope that they get fouled
  • Living and dying by 3
  • Dishing it in down low and expecting the 5 to just make play on their own

Look, I play street ball. If anyone who is playing against similar talent only did those 3 things on the black top, they would get destroyed 9 times out of 10. Yes, I'm saying that I do a bigger variety of offense in street ball than our coached team does. I'm sick of it.

Donnie Jones must go immediately!! He is another GOL who has over-stayed their time and if it continues the program will suffer long term damage! Please Danny White fire him immediately!!!!

Basic fundamentals: Boxing out (Cincy did great. Shot goes up, PUT A BODY ON SOMEONE!). Pursue the rebound (3 or 4 of our guys ran back to defense during the shot, the others typically watched to see if the ball was going to bounce their way as the other team got position). Pick and rolls, don't drive until pick is set. Playing against a zone defense, drive the basket to open up outside shot. This is all high school crap. Why doesn't this team know it?

I like Donnie but it isn't looking good for him remaining at ucf. We have a tough stretch of games. I only see us winning 1 game the rest of the season. It is really critical that we have a "decent" team with conference realignment.

It definitely hurts missing BJ and Henriquez plus Goodwin, but we should beat teams like Miami (ohio), Detroit, etc. We haven't exactly played a tough schedule in OOC and looked like an average mid major.

I was at the game last night. All the statements above are true.

Also, our talent is not what Cinn is. They make their 5' and 10' shots...we don't. They make their free throws. And they make 3 point shots that kill our comebacks.

I mean McBride is at the end of his Junior season and (in my opinion) he is not to the level we need him. He turned the ball over several times last night. I don't see him being what he should be his senior year either. He's a bit lethargic, hands not so good-drops passes, and should have many more minutes.

NOW....I realize that Adonis and BJ are out....and they will make a difference (so I am frustrated that I can't gauge our performance to see how much improvement we'll see next year)

One thing that has not stopped is the turnovers. We just keep turning the ball over (12 in the second half).....is this coaching? Practice? Player skill level??? UGH!!!!

So combine the turnovers with HORRIBLE free throw shooting.....and we lose the game.

My question is: Will donnie fix this enough for next year?

I am so frustrated with this team. I know we are rebuilding, I know BJ and Adonis are out (almost our 2 best players)

Part of me says "Donnie has never been a proven winner and it shows, so get rid of him" and the other part says "we have improved this year, let's see if Donnie can keep this going into next year, build the team, and become a winning coach"

I AM FRUSTRATED AND CONFUSED. :-(

To be clear, I'm saying our Basketball offense is like the GOL stereotype of football play calling: Run Left. Run Right. Pass.

Maybe if I'm bored I can total up our bench scoring because if it's sucky every game then between that and FT% we are killing ourselves right there.

BS, I think you missed that I was criticizing not defending the coaching. So, your response is complete wrong.
And I think you misunderstood even more so ...

I'm the one that is called a nuthugger even more than you, and this was me saying, "Hey, we nuthuggers are still around. And it's still okay to be one ... right?"

Dude ... lighten up. And people think I'm bad? ;)

SIDE NOTE: Remember when Donnie was going to solve all the problems with Kirk? Sometimes ... well, you know how I feel. ;)

I don't watch basketball, so am asking a general question. Is there any "new" style of basketball that is equal to the new style we'll be playing in football, or is it basically the same it has been? I guess the point I'm asking is, is there a new hire that would be as exciting as Frost, or would just a big name guy increase excitement?

Maybe we should inquire with these guys?
Damn ... page isn't available!

Well DJ seems to play pickup offense where everybody spreads out and passes the ball around and then one guy sets a pick and makes a move or throws up a shot because the shot clock is about to expire. That about sum it up?

Run the Chicago Bulls' Triangle Offense, Play Hi-Lo, Jesus anything!

I barely know anything about basketball, but zone and man. Ball movement and good passes create good looks. I like watching SMU. They will put on a passing clinic, but they also get higher rated players. In general ucf is terrible ball handling team. Maybe that would have been improved with BJ?

I don't know if DJ even has another year on his contract. If he doesn't have remaining years, it is likely he will be replaced. We might not ever know how this team could play with a true PG.

Ohhh big street baller speaks and feels some frustration.

I'll be the first to say that I am enamoured by your blacktop experience which I'm sure overrides all the experience Donny has.

LOL. I do laugh when someone on a message board talks about their street ball skills. Like Al Bundy talking about his glory days.

I don't think they'll fire anybody mid year, especially in basketball. I think they can him after this season is over. Looks like Joi W needs to go too. Jesus.

Exactly...fire someone midseason would be extremely rare in basketball. Unless there is a major scandal, he will be here until the end of the season. I feel like he got a tough break losing 2 PGs, but tough to survive multiple down years these days. I'm not sure he even has remaining time on his contract either.

So how long does UCF give Donnie to actually seriously compete for the AAC championship? I see the same problems year after year.
I have to agree with you. Our/His teams consistently turn the ball over and are consistently not that aggressive (which is a reflection of how Donnie Coaches)....JMHO :)

Horrible first half.

Down by 18 and only scored 15 in the first half. Like I said, Donnie can't coach offense.

Good to see Chad Brown get some time in the 2nd half. He showed he has some good upside. Chance looks like he could be great. The 2nd half also showed how important AJ Davis is to the team. Got the Memphis lead down to 10.

Going forward, I'm excited about the players we have. I'm done with Donnie though.

So, I get in the car and turn the radio on around 8pm. . I immediately know UCF is down by a lot by Marc Daniels voice. Listened for a few minutes then turned it off. Wife forgot to set the dvr for me. Glad I don't have to suffer thru it.

Is it football season yet?
