Lots of reasons for the terrible play.

No. 1, Scheme.

Cannot have an attacking style front where each defensive lineman has the freedom to choose his own gap and expect the linebackers to gap exchange correctly. May work on Techmo Bowl. Not in real life.

I have watched UCF long stick DEs without replacing with an outside linebacker, weak safety, or corner. That is simply unsound football.

No. 2, Linebacker depth.

Hard to play any defense, even a dime package, when you have only one legitimate linebacker on the roster.

No. 3, Defensive Coordinator

Whose idea was it to put a Cornerbacks Coach in charge of the front six or seven?
