Interview w/insider about AD White's controversial tenure.

Haven't listened to the whole interview, but the Buffalo blogger says he's "not a fan of White". Yet he fears all the financial momentum and capital campaigns he's put together will fall away if he leaves. He also says all the coaching hires he's made have been "savvy". I'm actually not sure what he doesn't like about him, but he was clear he doesn't like him.

"He's been a success in the things I want my athletic director to do"

I just listened to the interview again. It isn't clear why he isn't the biggest fan of him. He mentions that one of the biggest mistakes White made was not getting the media on his side earlier. He also mentions that at UB, White seemed to be a basketball guy first -- when he came in he fired some local beloved coach.

They asked him about his "itchy" trigger finger about coaches. Saying that he seems to want to bring in his own guys. "He absolutely wants to sink or swim with his hires." "His standards are very clear. He wants to compete for conference championships." "Everyone is very pleased with his hires over and over again."

It sounds like White is someone who's willing to come in and make some tough decisions. I'm sure that's going to rub some people the the wrong way. It takes some stones to operate that way, but you're also going to make some folks mad in the short term. I don't think it is terrible if there's an AD that'll want to come in and be aggressive about getting UCF athletics to the position we want to be in.

Where's the controversy?
1. Proven at getting businesses on-board;
2. Wants to win championships;
3. Has a good track record for hiring winning coaches;
4. Ole Miss/SEC experience;
5. Competed against NYC which is like our competition with the Big 3 FL schools;
6. Not afraid to fire unsuccessful coaches.

If he's hired, our basketball coach better produce this season.

You've got to like the "quick firing" of a coach if not producing aspect of him. Like the other thread says, basketball coach, baseball coach and others would be on "produce or else"! orders. He has "his guys" as the reporters intimated, and doesn't want to fail on someone else's hire.

I hope this is the hire. So many coaches and possibly some staff members in a our athletic department need cleaned out. Rooney and Joy Williams need to go. They've been given the time, too much time and with far too little results. Donnie Jones is on notice. The team had better look to improve and even that might not save him if White is the AD.

Just in time to put names on the back of the jerseys for Thursday night's game!

I think New York State University system would be a difficult place to operate as an athletic director. It is amazing that Buffalo is the only SUNY school with a full complement of division 1 sports. With the population that the state has that is unfathomable.

Is anyone willing to admit that Hitt hired his friend and the search agency found a minority and a woman to round out the interview process?

Who cares? I'd care more if the guy wasn't universally highly regarded. The folks in Buffalo that don't like him are just mad he was willing to come in and shake things up. If he does that here I think he's going to make a lot of friends real quick -- we need someone willing to do what it takes.

isn't that what Networking is all about? After the last 2 AD hires Hitt probably feels better with someone he trusts through family, etc vs the unknown outsider.

Thank you.. I think he is the kind of guy we need around here. Coach Jones needs to step it up starting tonight. Doesn't sound it takes much for him to change directions with a coach if he does not see results...that can be good or bad we will see. AP

Well DJ has had plenty of time to be moving in a forward direction. yes the marquee wins are nice but finishing in the bottom of the conference sucks.

I would say that the AAC is a big step up from CUSA in basketball competition/talent and that you we need to give DJ a chance to get the recruits in to compete. However even in CUSA we were always, at best, middle of the pack. So that's likely the ceiling we're headed for. I think his days are numbered.
