Is Chester Brown really that bad?

Our 'big time' recruit we stole from UGA. When this knight squad needs him the most, he just don't want to step up. Comes to UCF after UGA gave up on him, and plays soft like he doesn't give a crap. What a bust. I really liked this guy and his story when he came here.

Yes, that's a little harsh, but I feel this kid has all the potential in the world on and off the field, and he just don't want to realize it for whatever reason.

Don't blame the player here. Seriously, RS Jr or not.

The offensive line is one of those units that is a whole. It's really hard to have outstanding, individual efforts, and make a huge difference. You really need 2-3 solid guys, and some good playing time with the other 2-3. I would strongly argue the O-line is one of those units that takes time to meld. Injuries and changes can ruin all that time spent together.

Coaching can as well too. Key has been praised in the past for his O-line. That's what's been bothering me most, especially as I've become more of the "contrarian" viewpoint here as of late. I originally stated Key wasn't my first choice for OC, and have more recently conceded the results in this "perfect storm" is at least partially, if not more, his doing.

But I have difficulty believing the O-line is only the result of his poor coaching in prior years. I've asked for people to give examples where his O-line duties have faltered in the past, because he's received a lot of praise in years prior. If people can tell me, from players mouths, that he was inept and incompetent in past years, that would go a long way. Not just comments about Key as the man, as the OC, but as the O-line coach, before this year and the OC position.

I honestly think it's all the changes and injuries and everything else, which does have some to do with the OC playcalling too. That has to cater to the changes. But it's hard to put the blame on any one player, or even Key's past O-line role, unless there is real evidence he was incompetent in that role.

Improperly coached players typically play like that.
I'm sure you didn't really think hard on your response. He was coached by the same guys as Chris Martin, Torrian Wilson, and the Mcray twins (I'm sure you will correct me if I am wrong) and they didn't "play like that." He isn't as good as his potential because he probably doesn't care enough. He probably doscovered beer and women like most college kids and isn't trying hard.

^^^ This has been what I've been asking.

I'll indulge all the Key-haters out there, the "donKeys" if you will ... and assume Key is the absolute problem at OC. Now with that out of the way, I ask again ...

Was Key incompetent as the O-line coach?

Because I've read everything to the contrary. Player input, other commentary, even any off-hand comments from anyone inside the actual program, under the coaches or with the players? Not as an OC, but as the O-line coach.

Now that said, I really hate seeing this ...

He isn't as good as his potential because he probably doesn't care enough. He probably doscovered beer and women like most college kids and isn't trying hard.
Why do we ever go there?

I will concede there is a senior-leadership problem on the team. That seems to be for certain. GoL has long stated he, and the coaches, are very dependent on the leadership of the seniors.

But why did we have to go there? Let's go beyond seeking any evidence that this is the reality in his case, why did we even go there?

I think losing is bringing out the worst in our fanbase.

He's a student-athlete who chose UCF. If he's on target to get his degree, then I seriously doubt it was beer and women. Unless I also see the grades slip, I seriously doubt it's this, because the two are often tied.

The O-line is one of the most cohensive units on the field, and has to work hard as a team, practicing for some time. I don't believe a single, individual is going to lift up the entire unit. They are the guys with virtually no stats ("pancakes" at most), rarely praised, but always blamed (only negative stats, like "sacks allowed").

I am not a reporter or journalist. Do I really have any clue whether he is just not good enough or is distracted? No of course not. It was off-hand speculation not to be taken too serious. I know that I quit football and never reached my potential bc I was having too much fun chasing women and drinking beer in college. And I don't regret it at all. And no my grades didn't suffer. But I digress. Maybe Chester has all the physical tools and good coching available but just can't put that together. I have no idea. So I certainly don't know if he is focused or not and I was not trying to offend the sensitive ones out there. When talent doesn't pan out, it is often because the talent doesn't really care all that much to develop appropriately. Maybe that is the case with Mr. Brown? Who knows?

Sorry. I guess the OP got me going, and I now see you were being more "well, he's just a kid."

I know that I quit football and never reached my potential bc I was having too much fun chasing women and drinking beer in college. And I don't regret it at all.
I see where you're coming from now. As I've admitted many times, I was way too feeble minded to have been a student-athlete, still blaming others and trying to figure out my life at that age.

I guess that's why I hold most of our student-athletes in such high regard.

And no my grades didn't suffer. But I digress. Maybe Chester has all the physical tools and good coching available but just can't put that together. I have no idea. Again, sorry I jumped on you. You weren't the OP, and just merely trying to make those points, without trying to make anything stick. I'm just a little upset the OP went there.

I didn't have to think hard. The answer was obvious.....

What is obvious is the fact that you don't know what you are talking about and are just spewing what you think is popular right now in the forum. How was our offensive line so good and dominate when we had Martin, Wilson, and the Twins. How were they good with such bad coaching? Explain that? You have no idea. You will probably say something like "well they would have been the best in the world but the coaches sucked." That would be stupid. Brown just hasn't developed and perhaps he personally gets the blame.

Perhaps he would have been better suited to stay on the D-line as originally intended? Who knows. He hasn't panned out like far too many of our 2012 and 2013 recruits, who should be anchoring the team right now. Have a look at that 2012 class. Glenn was great, but left after just a couple years of productive football to sit on a NFL practice squad. Beyond Glenn we essentially got nothing.

Chester was not a 5 star recruit. He wasn't ready to play straight out of HS. He had physical tools that looked like they could be developed in a really good player.
That apparently hasn't panned out. This is why recruiting is as much about quantity as it is quality. Not every long shot 2/3 star OLine recruit turns into Jah Reid.

Thanks you for posting this. I've been thinking the same dang thing? He cant be any worse than Hudanick other freshmen. I know he's not an all conference type, but certainly strong enough to play on this paddy cake o-line

I've given you examples, but you are too stupid to understand it. Dead last this year, 111th last year and because you hold up your precious 2013 81st according to the metrics.

[QUOTE="cocoabeachjason, post: 292919, member: 2078" He probably discovered beer, buffets and women and isn't trying hard.[/QUOTE]

You really haven't said crap, and that's the thing. It's conjecture and continual bashing of me based on that conjecture. All while you continually accuse me of not knowing jack, and embarrassing yourself with comments about me that are just laughable.

Chester Brown is a bust. Why??? Because he's not talented, athletic or motivated enough. Why is this so hard to comprehend?? It happens all the time.

And yet time and time again I've used facts and metrics to dispute you. Not my fault that you don't understand it. But what else should I expect from someone who stalks players parents

What "facts"? That I don't understand "no huddle"? That I'm a "moron" and "dipsh--" for having a differing opinion, preferring a defense-oriented, ball-control approach?

Why can't you and I just disagree and leave it at that?

Simple concept to grasp.....

The players listed are in fact---better, even you figured it out. The lousy recruiting of our current coaching staff thought Chester could be coached up a bit-- They were wrong = coaching issues.

Pretty darn obvious.

You know the stats I just provided. The one that uses advanced metrics that clearly are too advanced for you
