It feels like this program is stagnant

Let me say that this could change if UCF beats the Gators. However, it feels like all the momentum of going to the big 12 is dead. Cincinnati has taken our spot as the best G5 team and has all the momentum in the world. Meanwhile, we had to endure a painful to watch season. It felt like every game was a chore to watch rather than it be something to build on. We have no qb while people are making the weird comparisons between KZ and Dinovo 2.0 and all the fire power and excitement is on the defense.

I expected there to be massive buzz about our best recruiting class ever. But there’s not. It’s just Gus struck out on every single transfer target he’s gone after this off season. That’s the narrative. He says we’ll add 10 more players, but from where? Then there’s the weird situation with the o line recruits something that Auburn fans warned about and as a uf grad school alum something sec teams all knew about Gus. He always messes with the o line recruits and it costs his teams dearly. It just feels like something is rotten within this program. Blame Heupel all you want, but he’s not the coach anymore and this is stemming from what he’s doing.

No one wants to watch this offense. It’s like getting a root canal. That’s why attendance dropped towards the end. We gave Gus a chance to correct his offense philosophy and now we’ve lost all momentum from the fan base. Seriously read the dungeon and read every other message board connected to UCF. There’s nothing but concern. This is well founded despite some shills saying you aren’t a true fan unless you pretend Mikey is kz 2.0 and Gus is a offensive genius. That doesn’t match reality and the fact that our two best playmakers want nothing to do with Gus should send giant red flares up in every UCF fan. This is not healthy. Something is very wrong here and to ignore it is not good. It feels like the 2015 off season. not that we are going winless, but that we are in for a painful next year now gus is probably going to promote Hinshaw. So our offensive staff will not be fun and exciting, but filled with a guy who was fired from Auburn, one fired from Kentucky and one fired from Texas . That’s awful.

Now if we lose to uf this will be an awful hit to the program. If we get humiliated then we are so f ucked on the trail. You have no idea. If uf humiliates us then all that buzz about us going to the big 12 will be dead. Now again THIS CAN CHANGE IF WE BEAT UF. But this program is not healthy and to pretend it is just seems wrong.

I never wanted Gus. I wanted Brian Johnson, Chadwell, or Dan Lanning. I wanted to avoid our Charlie strong and it feels like we made a mistake

Oh Lord, not this again. Another KOC.
Ah yes attack the messenger not the message. I forgot some morons do that. But you can’t refute that

A) Gus has struck out on every single transfer so far this offseason. Nix Tchio New Mexico lineman

B) there’s a lot of bad press around the program right now. Just look at the media rankings of first year coaches. Gus was mediocre to bad is the overall message. Uhhhh you think that’s good?

C) we were uncompetitive in the aac this year. That should NEVER happen yet here we are.

d) most think we’re going to get killed in the bowl game. That would be an utter humiliation and kill momentum.

Wow, I did not realize so much depended on one game. The difference between UCF and Cincinnati is that they have kept the same coach for several years and built the foundation. We are on our 3rd coach in 5 years I know that is difficult to understand the impact that has on a program, recruiting, and the student athletics. I think Gus will stick around and built that foundation that is badly needed going into the Big 12.. Playing a freshman QB just confirms our recruiting depth has suffered over the last 5 years. The game is just too complex for such a young QB, so to make it work, the coach has to simplify the offense. Developing a QB takes time. Yes, without an experienced transfer it may be a rinse and repeat next year. I don't understand the Chicken little from some fans THAT THE SKY IS FALLING. From a fan that has followed UCF since early 2000, and Considering everything that happened this year I think it was a good year.

Why? Because we aren't Bama? Geez. Gus just pulled in a great class (on paper). We have to get better on the field. You can't hit a button and instantly fix that.

....and BTW, getting into the Big 12 is stagnation now? We just went from having our noses pressed against the glass, looking in on the great dinner being served on the table inside, to having our own seat at that table. Sure, nothing is guaranteed on the field but we now have much higher guaranteed money and a more level playing field (and perception) than we did before.

...another BTW, technically Cincy, UCF, BYU and Houston are still G5 programs but we aren't. We are a P5 program now. It's not like that isn't going to happen, it's just a matter of when. So really, who cares about the G5 label any more. Much like yourself as a person, we just need to be the best version of UCF we can be.

In the grand scheme of college football this game means nothing because it is not a "game that matters" (other than to the fanbases). Not like the price of beer is going to change based on the outcome..

What foundation? You mean the foundation that probably won’t stick around like Quan lee once they get into this offense? Cause he was shopping himself around for weeks before signing day. “Too complex for a young qb”, explain why tvd killed it at Miami this year. Explain why Grayson from ccu killed it during a COVID year. You know why they did? Cause they didn’t have a retread puss y whose offense sucks calling plays. Yes getting killed by aac teams and losing to a hapless navy team sure is great. Yep right up there with the liberty bowl team.
And given how much shit UCF has talked about uf yeah this game is the most important game the last 2 years.

I agree to a degree that the program is stagnant at this particular moment, but it's not time to panic. Gus was brought in mid-February, he was basically dealing with the hand he was given, I don't think it's fair to critique this coaching staff until we start seeing their players in the mix, and if you believe recruiting rankings this our best recruiting class ever. I think if Gabriel stays healthy we go 9-3, blow out some of the shitty AAC teams and play more competitive against Cincy-SMU it's a much different tune most people are singing. Losing DG is huge, and it could be a killer, but let's see what Castellanos and the inevitable transfer QB bring to the table before we freak out.

What exact transfers are you talking about? Is there a public list of who this staff actively tried to recruit and who they didn't. Just because you contacted a kid doesn't mean you seriously recruited them. That's like saying that just because you offered a kid, you were actively recruiting them.

What bad press? Post some articles. All I read and see are articles about how great it is that we were able to be part of a bowl game that actually has street cred, and people want to probably watch it.

We were uncompetitive in the AAC? We finished 5-3 and finished in 3rd place. Cincy and Houston were the cream of the crop but to say we weren't competitive is an opinion, not a fact.

Again, the outcome of this game means nothing for either program. So if we lose, you think all our recruits are going to decommit? All that will happen is some fan's pride will get hurt, and that is their choice. Any bowl game that is not a major bowl is a crapshot anyways. So many factors and different motivations, above the regular season.

Van Dyke had a good first season starting but he was a redshirt freshman. Miami was 7-5 (5-3) and they are playing Washington State (7-5) in the Sun Bowl. This is killing it? Does Van Dyke beat King out of the QB job next season (assuming King is recovered from his surgery)? We'll see.

Grayson McCall was also a redshirt freshman in 2020. His 2021 stats were pretty much identical in 2021 so he didn't progress much, and its not like he had Nintendo stats. He threw 27 TDs against 3 picks, which is pretty darn good because he rarely turned the ball over. His rating was up as well so he made better decisions on the field. He obviously didn't think his maturation was good enough yet, and that is why he came back. He's good but to become a QB at the next level you have to be great.

From the level of expectations and hype that surrounded the program in 2017-2018 it is, but it was not sustainable. That's just not what was being perpetuated amongst the program or fanbase. In 2018, if you told this message board the team would not even contend for a conference championship for the next 3 years, most would be banish them as a USF/Nebraska troll.

Uhhhh if you don’t think this game has huge recruiting implications then you’re an idiot. Napier will use this as a recruiting tool to say hey don’t go to UCF. They aren’t competitive. Yeah this is a huge game especially on recruiting. And since UCF wanted a couple of MY players yeah this is pretty f ucking big.

lol yeah beating the mighty powerhouses like USF and sci then getting killed by Cincinnati and smu sure is impressive. Never once being a serious contender for the aac championship game again mighty impressIve.

tchio, Cameron etc all were on campus and didn’t come here. Hell tchio picked a dead gt program over Gus. Nix wouldn’t consider UCF because of Gus

Wow...first let me say...don't go to the games and I bet someone is in your seat. Second, I've got a suggestion. Take a deep breath, let the postseason play out and root for us (and Gus) tonight. We'll soon know the makeup of this entire class (including transfers). Then we'll all be more informed about the roster and the direction will be clearer. This is an important year for the program to improve, get ready for our inaugural Big 12 season and for Gus to show us that he can get some of his head coaching magic back.

I feel your emotion on this subject. I hope we see that kind of emotion tonight on the field. 🙂

This entire thread does not exist if DG did not break his collar bone…and more to the point if Johnson (WR) catches the crossing route rather than it bouncing off his shoulder and UL houses it….calm down…enjoy the inevitable ride to a BIG 12 championship in 2-4 years…JWB…

The trend upward is not a straight line in most cases but up and downs. Kind of like stock prices. If you take the long view we are in an upward trend. Nobody would have looked down on this season 10 years ago, so if we are disappointed now its a good sign. Maybe in a few more years we'll realize we have in fact been stagnating or are on our way back down but its a good ride overall. Its how sports work. Alabama staying at the top for so long is an outlier. If we are still on an upward trend like I hope we are, there will in fact be more bumps in the road like this with people worrying.

I don’t completely disagree ..having Cinci be the face of the League for 3 straight seasons is making UCF look like an add on when we were the Program that started the conversation

and the product is a rough watch ..this was the first season in a while that it was a chore to keep watching bc of how awful and uncreative the passing game is , maybe it is mostly Keene but we’ll see

I didn’t like the potential scheduling issues Danny White created but if there is one thing that Danny understood is Box office and that Offense sells. His hires created that UCFast identity that we seem to be losing . Recruiting talent is good but hope we don’t lose that identity to be stuck at 8-4 every year. We’ll see if the game tonight is any different than USF and Tulane

Excitement has died a bit. UCFast is dead. Still a chance to revive it but I’m not liking the offensive trend. Also only signed 14 in the class with anticipation of filling out the 25-30 slots with transfers but haven’t seen a lot of activity on that front. Hopefully after the bowl.

And whose fault was it that DG ended up breaking his collar. Gus. He should have never called that stupid crossing route then that boneheaded last play. That’s on him just as much as anything else. So is the lack of development of an offense and qb development. HE HAS NOT CHANGED AT ALL. Oh yeah and I would have posted this same thing cause I never wanted this bozo hired in the first place. We had a successful formula going then t-no comes in and f ucks it all up. Now we’re stuck with a retread who, unlike Johnny Dawkins, refuses to adapt to modern athletics.

btw Terry is the same genius who hired butch Jones ask asu fans about how that’s worked out.

UCFAST or super fast was not good for the defense, but it was fun to watch.

Ahhhh……………..somebody needs a hug. It’s gonna take time, Gus is still working with Huepel’s recruits, when he gets his skill players on the field then we can have a fair discussion about Him. You may not have wanted Gus, but he’s on track to recruit the best class in school history. Just chill.

Arguably the most injury-laden season in history. We lose QB1, WR1, RB1 (x2), Center, LB (x3), DL (x2), DB, Head Coach.....AND WE GO 8-4. 8 AND 4! Half a decade ago this is probably a two-win situation at best. Here we are with a great chance of 9-4 and, we're stagnant?

Every play can't be a 90-yard bomb to Tre Quan, or a 50-yard sprint from AK, or a BB-winning miracle TD. If you don't see the progression you're simply not looking for it.

Going 3 and out in a minute vs scoring a TD in a minute makes no difference to a defense. Our ranking in time of possession was lower this year than last year. We couldn’t sustain a drive or put points on the board. Double whammy.

Your an idiot and from your posts it’s clear you are either a butthurt Auburn fan or a UF/USF troll. Missed out on transfers… we got a great OLine transfer. Also we had possibly the best recruiting class despite having limitations put on by previous coaching staff. And we went 8-4 despite losing our #1 QB, RB and WR for most of the year, missing multiple defensive starts for games and starting a true freshman QB.
We lost a close game to Navy it happens. I remember losing to a bad UAB team in 2011, I guess we should have fired O’Leary right then.
This is the biggest troll post please go back and post on whatever board you normally post on. (Auburn, UF, USF)

I mean we lose a coach every 2 or 3 years. Gus just took over, freshman/high school QB, and injuries. We need a long term coach (and we're moving to the BIG 12) so things will get better. You could bet on it. UCF is a HUGE School! :)

Eacactly in 2018 when UCF beat Cincinnati 38 to 13 they didn't fire Fickell in his second year of coaching Cincinnati. Now look what he has built.

Gus promised to hire a great QB coach at his intro press conference. If he doesn't it will be concerning. TMo needs to be on top of this though I get the impression he's buddy-buddy with Gus.

Some could blame our S&C Coach. I was watching a podcast and a player said he hurt his knee pretty bad and it’s because most strength coaches do exercises that go against pressure. He found that coaches that teach absorbing pressure exercises helps you from getting non contact types of injuries and is better for the contact injuries. Want to say it was Amir Abdulla. Not sure.

jury still out on TMo . I lean more towards his scheduling philosophy bc DW seemed to lead to us getting blackballed but everything else is TBD

Let's check in on some other colleges around the country:

Clemson and FSU are dumpster fires at this point, along with the rest of the ACC (I legit forget that Miami even still has a football program)

Oklahoma just lost their star head coach along with a bunch of their top recruits.

Texas Longhorns are absolute trash with a terrible head coach, can't wait to see them become an SEC doormat.

LSU just paid a ton of $$$ for a coach and still won't be able to compete in the SEC with Alabama on a regular basis.

usf keeps hoping for an on campus stadium (go read their fan boards, it's really amusing)

UCF is having a "down" year compared to the success the last couple of years, this does happen in college football. Still in a better situation than many other college teams.

Thank Heup! For all of that.

Did it change for you? For me, this is one of the best days in UCF football history! But, I’m biased. I was in the Swamp for the last UCF vs UF match. I wanted this game BAD.
