It's not Ok!

I firmly believe those kids are suffering from emotional abuse, loss of dignity, and mental anguish. But at the hands of their parents, not at the hands of an actor from Universal.

Let me get this straight: A Universal Studios employee playing Gru snuck in an upside down 'okay' hand gesture (the White Power sign) into family photos with biracial children on two separate occasions, but its all the parents' fault for suing the theme park??!? WTF? What kind of half-assed nonsense is this?

Last I checked, hand gestures have significance in our culture.

I suspect quite a few middle-finger signs have contributed to a whole bunch of bar fights and road rage incidents over the years. And get this: the Big XII announced a week ago that Texas football opponents who dare to flash the upside down 'Hook'em horns' sign during a game will be flagged with a taunting foul. But on the other hand, these two sets of parents are way out of line for taking legal action when they discover a Universal Studios character has sneakily snuck a White Power signal into photos taken with their biracial children? Gosh it was it just innocent fun, right guys? Just a case of a couple families who couldn't 'take a joke', right guys?

The Red Meat site linked above was incredulous that the employee who did it was....gasp!...FIRED! Yeah, this 'poor innocent employee' and his 'misinterpreted' hand gesture is only going to cost Universal Studios a boatload of money.

It is not, and never has been, a white power sign. It's contrived outrage and nothing more.

If you think that’s a white power symbol, you’re stupid.

This is a ridiculous post, even for the guy was arguing that Jussie Smollett was assaulted by white racists even after Smollett himself recanted his story.

Even if this was a white power symbol (it’s not) it would have to be right-side up to form a WP.

Shuck is astonishingly dumb.

In fairness, Shuck never said that the smollet story was true. It was FC that showed his ass on that one.

Yeah, it was SUPER innocent! Gosh, who doesn't stick an upside down 'okay' sign into their photos? It's not a White Power thing, right guys? If White Supremacists and their ilk do it, they're simply saying 'Okay!" Sheeeeesh. Libs need to get over it, right? wink, wink, wink. :)

Nice attempt at a smear, but go back and check out the thread: I pegged Jussie Smollett as a publicity-seeking nutjob from the start.

tl;dr

if you're emotionally distressed over a hand sign you should kill yourself ASAP to avoid further trauma

It's the circle game. It has nothing to do with white supremacy.

I'm curious, when is a hand signal NOT REALLY a hand signal?

If the employee playing Gru had flashed an upside down middle finger in one photo or flashed the bird when he had his hand on the girl's shoulder in the other photo, would those particular hand gestures have been 'no big deal' too?

It's been my experience that when somebody flashes a hand gesture in a photo (ie. thumb's up, Number one, etc.) they're very demonstrative about it. If it was an innocent 'okay' sign, why be sneaky about it?

Lol…

Well for starters, it was a 4chan troll job that caught on because people are looking for racism around every corner and they ate it up.

But to answer your question, a hand sign for WP (white power) would not be a hand sign for WP when it NO LONGER LOOKS LIKE THOSE LETTERS.

This is a stretch. I didn’t have a clue that hand gesture symbolizes White power. It would be hard to hold your hands in any fashion if you consider every cultures interpretation of every hand signal.

Okay, guys, please explain what the heck that gru-suited employee was doing.

What’s up with his innocuous little ‘okay’ sign? If you’re going to make a hand sign, then you flash it — unless you’re intentionally being sneaky about it for some strange reason. People don’t typically make an ‘okay’ sign as they put their arm around a kid for a photograph.

But the cool thing about this kind of crap for the White Power crowd behind it is that the signaler can say with wide-eyed innocence after the fact, “What are you talking about? I wasn’t signally anything.” (Yep, it was just a coincidence that the gesture got snuck into those theme park photographs with children of color.)

I don’t know and neither do you. You don’t know anything at all about this employee, including his/her race. All you’ve seen are two pictures (of dozens he/she poses for every day).

To your last point, do you know if they were doing this gesture with other kids?

Nope, as with everything else… you don’t know shit, but it doesn’t stop you from being outraged about allllllll the white supremacy in the world. This evil lurks around every corner, waiting to get you… it’s going to very subtly ruin one of your vacation photos.

I am not sure, but upside down it would be a pussy over men symbol.

You still haven’t explained what’s up with the hand gesture. You can play the innocent IDK game all day but it was no accident. You just don’t casually slip your hand into the okay symbol. It was an intentional thing.

But that’s the beauty of the thing. Punks like the guy playing Gru can smirk under his mask and stick his WP message into a theme park photo and guys like you can express self-righteous outrage when he’s caught doing it.

But this time, it didn’t work. He got caught playing his little game AND got fired for it.

Probably everyone has made this gesture before.
Yes, most folks have made this hand sign. And when they’ve flashed it for a photo — like our former President — they’ve been overt about it.
How is this racist? Like calling the hello wave racist.
Why did the employee do it innocuously. What’s up with that? if it had no meaning, then why did he do it?

Just remember ...

When the right does it, it's always overt and racist.

When the left does it, it's always innocent and for a completely different reason.

He and others here are entitled to their opinions -- but none of them have been able to provide me with an explanation as to why a theme park employee in costume would subtly make a hand gesture -- one that in recent years has become associated with White Supremacists -- in photographs taken with children of color?

This particular hand sign is not one that can be misinterpreted from a casual gesture. If you see someone make it, it's definitely deliberate. We can argue over it's intended meaning, but you can't argue someone made it 'by accident.'

Which begs the question: Why? Why didn't Depictable Gru flash it in a straightforward manner like President Obama or Axel Foley above? Instead, he snuck it into the photographs in a low-key manner designed not to be noticeable. Again, why?

The very fact that Universal Studios subsequently fired the guy should tell you everything you need to know about the little game that was being played here.

But forget all that. The REAL VILLAINS are the PARENTS, right guys? ;)

Where did you see Universal fired him? I saw in their statement that he doesn’t work there anymore, but it doesn’t say they fired him. It’s a shit job, it’s more likely he quit before this ever came up.

As for motive for “making the hand gesture” it’s fairly easy to make it by accident.

How common do you think real white power nuts actually are? Is it that bad in Nebraska? You think this guy just hates minorities, so he’s gonna put on a costume and goof off with kids of all races all day, but just throw a white power hand symbol that isn’t actually a white power symbol into pictures with the darker kids? 😂

Shuck disagrees with the ADL.

“particular care must be taken not to jump to conclusions about the intent behind someone who has used the gesture.”

Shuck has people on ignore so he probably hasn't seen the explanation for this hand gesture. I'm willing to bet this actor uses the gesture in tons of pictures as a goof.

Look at the secondary headline sk8 linked above or read the article.

Yeeeaah, I'm sure that was it. :)

Yeeeaah, I'm sure that was it. Just an innocent accident and for some reason his bosses at Universal didn't believe him. :)

Who says it had to be some tattooed skin head? I suspect it was some clean-cut, All-American-looking college kid who was 'goofing around' thinking he was being cute -- until he got caught.

It's a common hand position for people that have worked in the trades for a long time and for people that are in the early stages of Parkinsons disease.

But "muh racism" is the only answer in your mind.
