Jaguars release former UCF kicker Matthew Wright

Because the Jaguars are ****ing retards!

Hasn't that been made clear enough over the past 10+ years (see their last coaching hire as evidence).

They're just a few steps back from the Magic as being the worst run franchise of the 21st century.

He was accurate, but didn’t have elite range. I am not surprised but am really happy he got a chance.

i expect he’ll be an emergency kicker fill-in for injury again soon.

Sucks when a guy that made 87.5% of FG attempts gets cut loose.....what is that stupid team thinking? Guess they want the first pick again next year.

The league should have a method for expelling chronically bad owners.

The lack of touchbacks has got to be the issue. He had some misses but he also saved them. Wasn't there a game he basically carried them with like 4 or 5 FGs?

I'm not into the NFL as much as UCF. I try to like the Jaguars but they make it extremely difficult. Seemed like he did a great job while he was there. They fired the other kicker and signed Mathew Wright. The other kicker is no suing the Jaguars. What a mess!

Seems like Urban Meyer is good at leaving behind a mess wherever he goes. Kinda like Lou Holtz.
Still don't understand why so many people look up to those guys.

4/4 in the last week Vs Indy when they knocked them out of the playoffs.

Not to mention:

“Wright's 54-yard game-tying field goal was a career-long, while his game-winning 53-yard field goal as time expired made him the first kicker in NFL history to make multiple field goals of 50-plus yards in the last 4 minutes of the fourth quarter in a single game. He also became the first kicker in franchise history to connect on two-50-plus yard field goals in the fourth quarter of a single game.”

He also won their 1st game of the year last year. But, with all those points missed on kick offs, I guess you have to cut him. It's probably more important to have a good kickoff than field goals. Wonder if anyone over there actually knows football?

Just a final word, for most of the last few years Prater spent at Detroit, he attempted 0 kick-offs. It seems punters can kick too.

He also missed 2 Extra points. He kicked off 31 times and only 6 touch backs. Out of the 25 times he didn’t force a Touchback, 2 were returned for a TD. Tied for most in league. Kick returns are pretty much non existent in NFL. You don’t want to give them a chance at a return. This is his 3rd team he’s been cut from. Even if he has to use PEDs he needs to do it to get leg stronger.

His leg has definitely gotten stronger since college, but it’s still not up to NFL standards. I think he’ll have a pretty good career bouncing around the league as a replacement when Kickers get hurt though because of his accuracy.

I respect the guy and wish him all the best. (Plus I read an article that his non-NFL employer was holding his job for him) but this is a spot on analysis.

I remember GOL's philosophy of intentionally kicking it to the 2 yard line outside the hashes to try to force a return where they could pin them inside the 20 (which worked very well an awful lot of the time). With touchbacks going out to the 25, I would think that you'd see more of that. I guess the reduced roster size in the NFL makes the all-time touchbacks more attractive.

And then I found this interesting article from when they made the change. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-implements-huge-new-touchback-rule-admits-it-could-backfire/

You would have to almost squib it and hope it doesn’t go out of bounds. They can fair catch at 5 yard line now and it comes out to 25. Better off kicking out through back of end zone and put defense out there.

from an article:

Wright is coming off an impressive season with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he stepped in as the starter for 14 games after Josh Lambo’s early-season release. The Central Florida alum did miss two extra points, but made 21 of his 24 attempts including a 53-yard game-winner against the Miami Dolphins in London.
