John Oliver - Biggest scam in sports: Stadiums

I hadn't seen this, but I love it.

I'm also sure that the usual suspects will still be unconvinced that throwing public money into stadiums is a gigantic waste of money and that stadiums are actually "economic drivers" for local communities. Against all facts and reason.

Stadiums are luxury items like parks, boat ramps, performing arts centers. They serve a purpose to the community even if they don't turn a profit. As long as there is one City out there willing to give money and take it up the behind from owners to have a pro team every City will have to do the same if they want to keep their team.

Sports stadiums are socialism for the rich. Every one of these teams can afford to build their own stadiums but they hold cities hostage to get them to foot the bill at punitive rates.

And all a city has to do is say no. They're not forced into giving billionaires money.

Yep. Cities can, and have, said no.

Then the team moves, and ( often ) the city steals a team from another city ( St. Louis, Baltimore, Cleveland, Winnipeg, Milwakee [ I have no clue how to spell that name, and I don't care to learn cuz it's Milwakee] ) or gets an expansion team ( Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Washington ).

We put libraries in cities around the country. That is the ultimate in socialized spending. It is just there for people who can read. And they keep buying new books every year. I mean holy crap, I haven't read the rest of them yet and you are buying more??? And why do you have 7 copies of 50 shades of grey? I can't read 7 at once, I only need one. You are overspending on this reading thing just so the rich old ladies can have a place for their garden club meetings and the homeless have a place to watch porn.

I mean no business ever made a decision to move their corporate headquarters into a town and no tourists chose to visit a town because there was a library. I mean heck, only a small percentage of the population even uses the thing.

See how ridiculous the argument sounds when you look at other municipal amenities that don't return money on their investment?

So let's get rid of all municipal spending. After all amenities are a giant waste. Let's get rid of sports stadiums and teams, opera houses, performing arts centers, art museums, science centers, libraries, parks, and mass transit. That will save the city and county billions. And I am sure population growth will continue and tourists will continue to flock to the area and businesses will definitely want to grow too.

IDK, I've never had to pay a private business to checkout or read a book at the library.

and you never bought a beer and a hot dog at the library and you never watched porn in the corner at a stadium and never had an old lady tell you to be quiet at a stadium. Way to miss the point.
Libraries aren't put in on the guise of economic benefit unlike stadiums. Also libraries don't get obsolete & billionaires don't piss & moan for more welfare 20 years after a library is built. Your argument sucked ass.

Wisconsin is going to pitch in $250M for the new basketball arena. The owners will pitch in $150M. At least it looks nice.

Take the starch out of your undies. It was satire.

You are the same guys who told frogerz to negotiate for big money or quit which is exactly the stance owners take on stadiums. It's just different because one one millionth of the deal theoretically comes out of your pocket.

Be true to your stand and never attend an event in a publicly funded stadium. By the way that includes bright house which was paid for with state money whether directly or indirectly.

Take your faux rage and direct it where it should be focused like at a ketchup factory who is hurting livingltomatoes tomat

If you weren't being sarcastic, I would agree with this post.

But since you're being serious, how do you measure if spending money on an "amenity" was good idea if you don't use a cost / benefit analysis aka the profit equation?.

"Pitch in" -- as in they're going to sell the naming rights to the place to recoup their $150M invested so an ownership group that is worth > $4B is getting a free arena.

Yay socialism!

Throwing money at sports owners seems to be a bi-partisan effort nearly everywhere. It's shit.

There are literally 10,000 better things to use $250M on to spur economic activity than an arena.

Right! Do you know how many missiles we could build with $250m!??!?! That really spurs economic activity. - says the person who benefits from the spending that is a net cost to the majority.

In searching the net for articles about this subject, I noticed 1 thing in common with all the whiners "there are better things to spend the money on". Just funny that in this era of deficits not one mentioned actually NOT spending/wasting the money. Truly pathetic.

PS, $250 m is an incredibly cheap bill to the public considering one website has the Dallas taxpayers putting up over $1 Billion, and many other stadiums the kick was $400-500m.

If you don't like it vote them out of office or move. Everyone whines about this shit but no one does anything about it. Miami had the balls to match Ross' bluff and he's paying for his upgrades. Don't elect pansies who only worry about the next election when they're in office and are people pleasers.

That's the same intellectual level as, "if you dont like big government then never drive on a public road again." Gtfo of here with that weak sauce.

Btw pragmatism doesn't make you smart. It just makes you logically inconsistent. That's what I expect from Statist
