What happened with O'Leary? He took you guys to a Top 10 finish in 2013 and won the Fiesta Bowl. Then all of a sudden two years later you go winless. Did he just forget how to coach? What do you guys think happened?

He wanted to retire after the Fiesta Bowl win. Hitt talked him out of retiring. His heart wasn't in coaching football anymore.

It's called 25 million/yr (or more) budgets versus 1 million/yr budgets. We won big in 2013. It cost us a bunch of the staff that made us successful, plus our OC retired. O'Leary was in his last year so who wants to get on a staff they know will get blown up the next year. That's right....people who got canned and were looking for any job. We also had an inordinate amount of injuries...like 4-5 sigma. Perfect storm. Good news is we limp through this season and should be much better next year. This just wasn't tweaking the offense. We went a total different direction.

He tried to move on from coaching into an AD role but hired a staff that was completely unprepared and ineffective as coaches.

George was good with defense but terrible at offense. This was only amplified by a million after our OC Charlie Taffe retired after the 2014 season. They tried to promote from within but it was a disaster. Combine this with we we're extremely young due to players graduating and leaving early for the NFL and significant injuries to the QB, OL, and our best WR and you can see why we were terrible.

Unfortunately in the Group of 5 we don't get the benefit of reloading every year with ready to play talent. We gotta develop young players and they were just too young and unprepared to play at a college level. When we started losing the coaches knew they were gone so they quit on the kids and the kids quit along with them.

Don't forget the program was being run by our "Coach-in-waiting" in 2015. Just wasn't a smooth transition and also had a perfect storm of early departures, youth, injuries, and bad bounces.

Where have you been the past 24 months?

Cyclic football gods. The same energies behind why the Washington Huskies are top 10 again, Michigan State sucks again...and Tulane being considered for Big 12.

All things happen for a reason. George should have left after 2013. But the good news is that we were in position to pick up Scott Frost who has brought an entirely new energy to the program. If George leaves before 2014 we are likely stuck with some crappy coach.
