JT Daniels in the transfer portal

Would be a serious upgrade in passing.....but the guy isn't very nimble (at least that is what the stats say). Although we really need another option in the QB competition, he would be a longshot to end up here on both sides.

I don't think he would want any part of our offense, and he isn't a good fit from our side

We don't have a strong passer in the QB room unless Plumlee has more than I've seen on tape and Mikey takes big strides in the off season.

Serious upgrade based on what? Star rating? See Gatewood. Opinion? Ok, everyone has one. Stats? Kenne had better stats (more TDs, fewer interceptions, higher QBs rating, avg. one less yard per passing attempt) their freshman year…across the board despite having almost 100 fewer attempts.

Some of you all have to examine your confirmation bias and look at these QBs objectively and stats…most of these transfer portal QBs and their stats…look an awful lot like Keene or worse…the stats and their past performance don’t support they’re a “serious upgrade” right now. Saying so is is like flipping a coin and calling heads or tail and getting it right…not on objective stats…at the same point in their development…stats show Keene to be better than Daniels…may the best man win the starting job. I don’t see Castellanos( a HS player whose never taken a snap in college), Plummer or Daniels as a “serious upgrade“ right now…to say otherwise is just guessing .Not on their on field performance after one season….I trust Gus to put the best QBs we have out there.

Doesn’t matter because he isn’t coming here, but would be a serious upgrade.

Gus did a really good job not overexposing Keene, and Keene did a good job not turning the ball over....but we scored very few points against the really bad teams in he AAC. In essence we were playing not to lose way too much.

Can Keene improve a little and get the starting job? Sure, he certainly doesn’t have a lot of competition at this point, that is the problem.

not a “serious upgrade“ based on stats…your opinion ok…and I believe in Santa, so it makes it so, ha…so….Over the 11 games which Keene started…what would a “good“ college QB‘s stats be for us? What stats should Keene have put up to raise him from the “terrible “ category several(not me) on this board put him at, to simply being a “good” QB? In other words, what stats should we expect from a “good QB” at a minimum from next years’s starter over 11 games as a baseline?

completion %. Yards Season Yards per completion avg. TDs. interceptions Rate. ?

There has been a lot written over the past several months that detail the QB play last season, no need to rehash it over a guy that probably wouldn’t even return our phone calls.

It doesn't really matter for stats, although it helps demonstrate. But one could watch Keene's performance vs. USF as clear indicator of why he would not be designated as a good QB. Ignore all stats, and just watch how many times he rolled out to his right and heaved it out of bounds. With multiple instances where someone on the field was wide open. Last year his role was to not be the reason the team loses, as oppose to the reason the team wins which is stark contrast of Milton and Gabriel. Which against legitimate opponents is going to be hard to win if you have low confidence that the QB can take over a game and march down the field with urgency.

Dominate run game get help, but you get a passing team like SMU that can put up 50+. You need a QB that will have to step up as well.

Thoughts?? Would he be a good fit for Malzahn's offense?

Guy has Keene’s wheels and got beat out by a 2 star juco talent. Id rather let TC/Plumlee compete for it since they both fit Gus’ scheme

I like Keene's attitude and willingness to fight through injuries. I hope he progresses and becomes the answer for UCF. I'm not sure if it will happen or not. I'm not looking back at his stats because they are in the past and we all know QB's can make huge strides from year to year. For me, the starting job is his until someone beats him out. It's up to him at this point.

If you want to show Keene's deficiencies in a statistical manner, just look at yards per pass attempt, and his rushing stats. (or lack thereof) Being a dink and dunker and also zero threat to run is not going to lead to a lot of success in the long run.

But Plumlee is a huge upgrade over Keene.

If Plumlee can match what Keene was able to do from a passing perspective (not a high bar) and bring the scramble/run game we know he can, then you have a serious upgrade this year.

Bowser/Richardson in the back field, Plumlee as a QB, Okeefe in motion..... That defense has a lot to process and all of the potentials have serious wheels.

Funny how those who bash Keene the most are evasive and won’t define what a “good “ qb’s stats should be…analytics are part of what’s used in defining success and deciding who plays….not weak, emotIonal, non factual opinions or passing an amateur’s eye test

Add a couple of top receivers like Flash and Kobe Hudson (Auburn's leading receiver last year) and you've got weapons sideline to sideline.

2017 UCF: 332 Passing YPG, 48 PPG
2018 UCF: 257 Passing YPG, 43 PPG
2019 UCF: 317 Passing YPG, 43 PPG
2020 UCF: 357 Passing YPG, 42 PPG
2021 UCF (Gabriel Starts): 301 Passing YPG, 45 PPG
2021 UCF (Keene Starts): 166 Passing YPG, 28 PPG

That statistical enough for ya?

He had decent stats, but yards per attempt is very low. He also got his best stats aginst the worst teams in fbs.

Yuck 🤢
He was a serviceable backup who’s talent and physical attributes Gus’ game plan could do little with. We all watched the games, it was a struggle. On to next year and hopefully some improved qb play.

To me a good QB does what the team needs to win games. If he passes, designed runs, or scrambles I don't care. Mikey won some games for us. I greatly appreciate that more than anything. When DG went down, I thought our season was doomed. It turned out to be a good year and Mikey was a part of that. His stats weren't good and it was ugly at times but he will always be the first UCF QB to beat the gators.

Yep. Not asking for a love fest but at least put some respect on his name.

As far as running is concerned, I think Gus took out Keene on running plays to keep him from getting hurt

Miss. State's Will Rogers threw for the 3rd most yards this past season and his yards per attempt was 6.9....Keene's was 6.4.

The two QBs ahead of Rogers had an average yards per completion of 8.7 and 8.9,.... so the top three passing QBs in college football threw for 1/2 yard , 2..3 yards, and 2.5 more yards per completion than Keene....lots of dinking and dunking....

Math, 2.5 yards more per completion is a lot.

you see any other guys in the 6 range other than the guy who plays for Mike Leach who is known for throwing the ball 70 times per game?

So a "good" QB.....not an "Elite" QB...... at UCF should average well over 300 yards a game?

Those aren't stats for a "good" QB....they're stats for an Elite QB in college football.

Only 15 out of 130 teams averaged over 300 yards passing this past year. The median (65th out of 130 teams).... which is what I would define as good was 230.6 yards per game....a far cry from over 300 yards a game.

Those who "liked" and think a "Good" QB averages over 300 yards a game must think an elite QB throws for 600 yards every game... Now I see what you expected a kid 5 months out of HS to do....smh....I'm done discussing this.

Can you at least fix your math in your previous post?

the points per game is the bigger issue, but if you don’t think there is a correlation between our passing yards being cut in half under Keene and us scoring 2 TDS less a game then I’m not sure I can help you.

Out of 130 teams we finished 101...impossible to spin that...either he gets a hell of a lot better or we go with Plumlee...next topic please

Only 15 teams out of 130 throw for 300+ yards per game…”But, but, I think throwing for 300 yards is easy”…..”anyone we bring in can do it”…..it’s that easy……I can’t dumb down my points any more….keep having delusional expectations…it just shows how little some know about the game and can’t get past concrete thinking

Who are you quoting? You're the only one who keeps bringing up 300 yards per game.

You don't need to throw for 300 yards per game to be a good QB at the college level.

You definitely need to throw for more than 166 yards per game if you have zero running ability, though.

Again, the bigger number is yards per attempt. 6.4 is terrible.

I don’t think he knows what quotations mean.

“Only 15 teams out of 130 throw for 300+ yards per game” but 112 teams out of 130 threw for more than MK, who also can’t run. I don’t know what argument is being made here, that’s not good. I’m sure we all hope that improves next year whoever the QB might be.
