UCF kicker Matthew Wright isn't sure where it started, but at some point during his high school career he became known as "Matty Ice."
Punter and holder Caleb Houston says it's because he has "ice in his veins."
Though he's just a redshirt freshman, Wright looks well on his way to becoming UCF's next great kicker. After an ill-fated attempt that was blocked near the end of the FIU game, the Pennsylvania native has made eight field goals in a row, including three last weekend at Temple.
"I've been very pleased with Matt," head coach George O'Leary said. "He hit the 48-yarder and kicked off very well with the wind and against it. I was pleased with him. I said I thought we had two decent kickers when we started the year and we do. They're both very good kickers, only true freshmen, so I think they have a great chance to be really, really good players in the future."
The Temple game served as a homecoming of sorts for Wright who is from Lancaster, about an hour and a half from Philadelphia. In that game he connected on field goals of 48 , 27 and 41 yards. The 48-yarder was a career high.
"I was pretty nervous (at the beginning of the season), but my holder Caleb Houston always tells me a little joke and makes me feel better before I go out there," Wright said. "I was nervous (the first time kicking), but I've practiced enough... I'm more comfortable now and hitting my stride."
