The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back Kamar Aiken to complete their wide receiver corps. Philadelphia announces it signed Kamar Aiken and released Markus Wheaton Wednesday.

Aiken was an under-the-radar signing for the Eagles in training camp because of how things didn't go well for him with the Indianapolis Colts last season. He had a career-low 133 yards and averaged 8.9 yards per catch with a catch rate of 34 percent. All this was withoutAndrew Luckthrowing him the ball, as he was out for the season with shoulder surgery.

The Eagles were hoping to get the 2015 version of Aiken, when he had 75 catches for 944 yards (12.6 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. Aiken was injured throughout the preseason and was eventually released to make room for DeAndre Carter. The Eagles worked out Aiken Tuesday along with Breshad Perriman and five other players.

Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Joe Douglas signed Aiken as a free agent in 2013 to the practice squad when he was with the Ravens, so there is some familiarity there.

"Kamar has really done a nice job," said Eagles head coachDoug Pedersonback in August."Again, this is a guy that's kind of a bigger receiver. He’s physical. He’s smart. He's a really good route runner. Strong to the ball. All the things you want.

"And has done a nice job. He's come in and he's accepted the role, whether it's mixing with the first unit or the second unit. Excited to see where he's at in a couple weeks."

Wheaton's salary is still fully guaranteed since the Eagles signed him before the first game of the season.

The Eagles need all the help they can get at wide receiver at this point.Alshon Jefferyis "day-to-day" as he recovers from rotator cuff surgery whileMack Hollinswas placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

Philadelphia hasMike Wallace,Shelton Gibson,Nelson Agholor, and DeAndre Carter as the wide receivers on the active roster. The Eagles wide receivers struggled mightily in the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, having just 44 yards on 16 targets in the 18-12 victory. Agholorled the way with eight catches for 33 yards while Carter had one catch for 10 yards.

Wallace was targeted three times, not having a catch in the contest. Wallace was open on two deep passes, but was held on one play andNick Folesthrew a bad pass when Wallace had a step onRobert Alfordin the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were believed to be looking for a "Z" receiver with the ability to play the "X." Instead they chose Aiken, who they were familiar with and who plays primarily the "X."

Aiken has 143 catches for 1,672 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Colts, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, signing with Buffalo as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Aiken's best season came in 2015, when he had 75 catches for 944 yards (12.6 yards per catch) and five touchdowns.
