Sept 22, 2001 UCF at Tulane in the Superdome

One of my biggest memories about that game/week was for almost all of us, it was our first time flying after Sept 11th attacks. I still remember sitting in an aisle seat of I think an old L-1011 Tristar on Delta (think we connected thru ATL), and maybe for the first time, started up a small conversation with another "big guy" who was sitting in the aisle of the middle section, as we were both close to the front of the plane.

Anyway, after making it to New Orleans, the game turned out to be an exciting one and maybe UCF RB Alex Haynes best ever game (4 TD's, 148 yds on 25 carries).

All UCF Fans and then many Tulane fans started to cheer "USA! USA! USA!" after the National Anthem was played.

UCF took a 1st Q 14-0 lead on 2 Haynes TD runs.

Tulane made it 14-10 in the 2nd Q before Schneider threw a 24 yd TD pass to Doug Gabriel to make it 21-10 before Tulane added a FG right before halftime to make it 21-13.

Tulane scored a TD run by RB Mewelde Moore (had 134 yds on 22 carries....later played several years in the NFL) but UCF stopped the 2 pt conversion to make it 21-19.

4th Q was pretty crazy...as Tulane kicked a FG to lead 22-21 but UCF came back with another Haynes TD run and a 2 pt conversion to make it 29-22 with 6:38 left in the game.

Tulane then evened up the score in a hurry on a TD reception by Moore to make it 29-29 with 5:04 to go in the game before Haynes scored the game winning 23 yd run with just 2:20 left in the ball game and UCF held on for the 36-29.
