We will finally have someone in the Pentagon who is there to assure that we have the greatest fighting force on earth, rather than using the Pentsgon to insert socialist justice warrior reforms or being dictated to by some dolt White House Security Advisor who has never been to war.

The Pentsgon under Obama was utterly embarassing.

I like Mattis for this post and it's mainly because he helps round out Trumps shortcomings in the defense area. Trump has never worked with the military or had consistent interactions with the upper echelon of military leadership. Most presidents have this experience from their time in the Senate/House. Mattis can help provide guidance to Trump in this area because of his time as a General and should be able to provide a spot on assessment of our capabilities/shortcomings. Most tend to judge him by his nickname "Mad Dog", but forget he also goes by "Warrior Monk".

I actually like the Mattis pick. I have read The Only thing Worth Dying for though and I'm not sure those guys would consider it grasping at straws. Nonetheless, I'm not sure his approach to ISIS will be all that different from his predecessors.

I do my rounds of news reading in the morning through CNN, Fox, and the BBC. It's interesting regarding Mattis. His comments on Donald are:

1. The lead story on CNN.
2. The lead story on the BBC.
3. Nowhere to be found on Fox.

It's insane how often this happens. I remember something similar when Manafort was charged. Every news company in the world had it as their front page article because of course. Fox had an article about some Mexican guy who killed someone.

Yesterday our current Secretary of Defense made a strong statement that our military should never be used as his boss was urging unless the request came from a Governor.

...then in the evening after a meeting with Trump, he said "Nevermind." :)

Confirmation bias aside, this could mean something more than just Trump intimidating him to change course. I'd prefer to believe in your sentiment that Trump gave him a brow beating. On the flip side, Esper may have received some kind of intelligence about a threat which is more than a little bit scary. There are more villains out there than just Trump.
