DOJ seeks proposals for pizza parties, DJs, carnivals for child-friendly prison visits

As part of a $1.75 million grant program to make prisons more child-friendly, the Department of Justice is encouraging applicants to submit proposals for "visitation experiences" like pizza parties, DJs, camping trips and carnivals.

"Bonding trips" were also discussed, as some children have been away from their parent for a length of time. Cuthrell said "a camping kind of excursion" or a "carnival setting over the course of a couple of days" is something the DOJ would support.

If we’re talking about repatriating felons into society in a productive manner, maybe it’ll help. But the problem is that most convicts can’t get decent work when they get out and no amount of feels-good imprisonment is going to change that.

I'm not sure it's a great idea to give kids the impression that prison is a fun place to be.

Works fine in other countries. But they also have better social safety nets so the likelihood of prison being an attractive alternative to regular everyday life is less. Here, who knows. But I don’t think treating incarcerated people as more human is a bad thing.
