McNeill fired at ECU

Looks like they want in on the fun of hiring a hot shot P5 OC.

McNeil was no real prize, but he did some good things there. The worst thing about this is the timing. Recruiting is currently open and the coaches are already taking positions elsewhere. Unless they have someone in the wings ready to sign, I could see this as a disaster.

I know there's some posters here that would be against this on principle....the ones that wanted to give GOL the chance to right the ship. In this scenario, i would have given him another year. You lose a coach thats given you five straight wins against the ACC, solid winning seasons in between. Why not just make adjustments and find new coordinators? .

Doesn't ECU just wait to see who doesn't qualify for college and then recruit those players?

Just look at their 2016 recruit list and you can see why this needed to happen. Sucks for them though that it is happening so late.

If they think they are going to get a look by the ACC by making this coaching change they are nuts. They could Vince Lombardi and not get an invite still.

What a strange firing. Though he was not the greatest game day coach (see his debacle of game management against us last year), he was still a pillar of consistent success there. They lost Carden and Hardy to graduation, and their projected starting QB before the season. Oh and they still beat VT this year. I think he deserved to last through a down year. That consistent success combined with all of those wins against in-region P5 schools (UNC, NC State, VT) makes this firing a real head scratcher.

This seems like a super dumb decision. Everyone is talking about how competitive the coaching market is this off season and ECU has decided to jump into it late.

I have to agree stupid firing, tho 42-34 in 6 seasons isn't great. But here's an interesting "misquote"

"You realize we're the laughing stock of college football, right?" McNeill asked Thursday. "I went to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Donnie. ... From Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Dabo Swinney (Clemson) – all of 'em, all of 'em were like 'What the ... ?' ... Gene Chizik and all them. And Compher was not at that deal. He was not there. ...

"We're the laughing stock," McNeill said again. "We're the laughing stock of college football. East Carolina is. The laughing stock."

Here's what Ruffin McNeill said to Billy Weaver about the quotes in the article:

"I was asked about the climate at ECU and what others are saying about ECU and I repeated what I was hearing."

McNeill went on to say "I went to ECU at 17 (years old) and ECU is family. I have never said anything negative about the university and never will."

Who the hell is laughing about ecu? I think 0-12 is worse (except who didn't expect a down year) but the real laughing stock in my mind is Cincy. What a crap year they had when they were expected to be either 1 or 2 in the AAC.

Hate him because he's a butt pirate, but you got to respect him. ecu offered a 3 year extension for him at the beginning of the year, he refused because his agent (an ex-ecu trustee chairman) wanted to get more $, plus the new contract didn't give the assistants any raises which was in McNeill's old contract. He partially was looking out for his assistants.
