-Tip-off tonight at 8:00PM EST

-I’m nervous about this one (a lot actually). Heading out to Kansas mid-week, tough environment to play in. Our guys have to get over this hump against the Shockers

-It would be great to have some momentum, potentially winners of three of four if they were to win tonight, heading into the biggest home game of the year this Saturday.

-What to expect from the Shockers? COVID has shut down their program since early January? Will they be rested? Or rusty? Healthy? A lot of unknowns…

-Have to key in on Tyson Etienne, he was the AAC Player of the Year last season. He’s been cold shooting the basketball this year, can’t let him get going early.

About to be 0-8.

If we can Dawkins, who do you replace him with ? With him, we are a slightly above average AAC team. Without him ? That's the great unknown.

I’m sure we can get a great coach going into Big 12. If we do it after this year we could see a few guys leave. I think 4 are seniors anyway. Johnson will go where his Dad goes. New recruits may not come. We’d have to rely on transfers to fill holes.

Any excitement from earlier this year is long gone. Memphis turned out to not be that great and outside of Miami we don’t have a solid win. Such a veteran team but too many transfers and no cohesion. Big contrast to the years under Speraw.

Speraw didn’t have good teams. Never won a tourney game. The Conferences we were in were trash. But Michigan is turning out to not be a great win. I’m hoping we don’t get run out of our own gym this weekend.

This season was basically over 3 or 4 games ago. Odd bunch, good enough to beat anyone and lose to anyone.
Best we can hope for is NIT.

Reynolds puts the ball down every time he gets it low post. Question: Is ANYONE COACHING him? He can hit most of his free throws but very ineffective under the rim. I thought this year he would come out. Sigh. Also down by 15 to start the game...hmm. wow. No low post game (CJ tried a bit this game) just gives the defense one less thing to cover.

Dawkins won't make it unless he starts coaching and recruiting in the Big-12. Houston will kill us Saturday. This is Dawkins team and recruits now. Honestly, I don't see the coaching. My opinion.

I thought Speraw won 1 in the Atlantic, going into the big Dance for the first time back in the 90s?

Memphis, Michigan, and Miami were solid wins.

Embarrassing losses.....yes plenty of those this year. JMHO :)

We will need a new coach for the Big 12. We'll need an aggressive, progressive coach and recruiter. Maybe a miracle happens and Dawkins starts coaching these guys and recruits.

Dennis Gates. Strong coach and motivator. Knows the state from his time under Leonard Hamilton at FSU.
Going from a good team in a middling nearly non-existent conference to a team about to go into the Big 12 ? He might be an upgrade, but he would also be an unknown, too. I think Dawkins deserves a year in the Big 12 (2023-2024) and if we bottom out, then it might be the best time to do a complete program reset.

That said, Gates resume is impressive.

I’m not sure of question. We’ve been in tournament 5 times. Dawkins won with Tacko and his son. All the other years we lost first game.
That 2018 team had the perfect storm of having almost the entire starting lineup and multiple bench guys with a minimum of 3 years starting. Multiple players starting for 4 years together. 23 year old coaches son, and of course Tacko Fall.

On the court, that is Dawkins only highlight and he is never going to have a similar situation again in terms of player experience, understanding, and talent. That was his peak, and with key pieces not being his recruits.

They never had the lead in this game, trailing from the start after an opening 17 to 5 run. Who is giving the pep talks before the game?

Pep talks? Who's preparing this team for the opponent each game? Frankly, it seems we fall behind because of lack of preparation vs the preparedness of our opponents. We've got a dozen (count em 12) coaches on the staff in various roles and a bunch on the bench every game. Who is in charge of preparing this team each game? And I won't even get into where the buck stops....

The Atlantic Conference game I thought we won once. That was the first time we went to the dance I believe. Of course we lost the first game in the dance.

UCF has wins this year vs these AAC Teams:
#3 Temple (4-2)
#4 Tulane (5-3)
#6 Memphis (5-4)

UCF is in 6th place at 4-4.

Obviously bad losses vs cow u and Wichita don't help.

We won Conference 4 times. 4 auto bids to tourney. Lost 1st game all 4 times. We were in bad conferences most of the time.
Yeah...TAAC and ASUN were mostly jokes but at that level (small budgets), it was an OK conf but so fee fans followed the team as.most games had just a fee hundred fans show up.

We lack a leader.
Darius Johnson, even as a true Freshmen, seems to be one of the most vocal leaders on the court and now is play is vastly improving (shooting 40% from 3 in conf play after starting the season 0-12 from downtown).

He may turn into that guy but as a true freshman that's a big ask. I love his physical build. He could turn into something very similar to BJ Taylor. I'm not talking about stats, though. We need a team leader to take over all the intangibles, including all the off-the-court stuff. Nobody looks like they are running the team. Trust me, every team needs an alpha or two, whether they are vocal or lead by other attributes. I just don't see it.

So, it appears we've got a FR PG (just recently a starter) and a transfer SR C (who has a hard time staying out of foul trouble) as our leaders. It's a shame that none of our returning players (a few of whom think they should be in the NBA) aren't leaders for this team. That can't be positive for them.

Time to change the thread title.
