Men & Women's bball opening games Monday double header

38-27 half time. UCF looks pretty good. Tall and aggressive. Good defense. Bethune has a bunch of turnovers and bad shots.

Wait CJ is hurt again ?

how?
Was CJ ever really healthy? Doesn't seem like it. Our starting 5 looks decent and our depth seems OK at the 5 but the rest of the roster is young and will need to grow up fast. There wlll be a lot of pressure on Tyler Hendricks and the two overseas freshman that we added (one from Germany and one from Lithuania) to contribute. All have good bloodlines with Tyler's brother being a high NBA pick and the overseas guys being sons of pro basketball players in their countries. So they have the game in their blood. Can they adjust and make solid contributions in their frosh years? It's a lot to ask (maybe a miracle) but it's what we need to even think about competing in the B12.

43-21 UCF at the half. I like what I see for game 1.
Watching the second half was like pulling teeth.,....the teams had 41 turnovers total and there were lots of fouls called.,,20 minutes of basketball seemed like a lifetime. But a win's a win.....good performances by Jaylin Sellers (23 points) and the 3 rotating C's (20 points and some blocks). The starters played well with Darius in control and seem to have decent chemistry. The youngsters came off the bench and played hard. Hendricks is not flashy but he's sneaky good and can develop into a baller. Nils (from Germany) has decent handles and is a good shooter and Mintautas (from Lithuania) hustled and is not afraid to mix it up inside. But without CJ and Jahlon Young (the PG who committed but never arrived and transferred to Memphis instead) for depth, we've got a real challenge to play competitively for a full 40 minutes if we stay healthy let alone if we have any injuries. Any success this year will rely on the youngsters playing more and contributing like veterans. We'll know more after the next game at #13 Miami (final four last year with some returnees).

What I liked:
We played good defense. We have better depth than last year. Of the new guys, Sellers seems like a beast….plays 110% all the time. Hopefully he becomes a team leader. I really like the two Euro kids as well. They are freshman. They are young and will get man-handled but they just look fundamentally good.

Bad:
Finishing fast breaks. Turnovers under pressure. #12’s shot looks as bad as Joachim Noah’s…I don’t think he even tried a jumper and I don’t know if we want to see it…liability on offense and FT line when in the game, even with his big, thick body-type. We aren’t very big. I think rebounding might be a problem when we get into conference play, especially if the two big guys get in foul trouble. Hard to tell what we really are because FIU seemed pretty bad. I guess time will tell.

Our women are better 3-point shooters than our men.....we shot over 50% from and made 13 3's. Kaitlin Peterson is deadly from deep. Also, our inside game is decent but will need to continue to get better in order to open up our 3's. An in and out game could be very effective for the ladies. And best of all, the transfers brought in were from top tier programs (Indiana, LSU, Missouri) and that shows.

we will play the games. we were also picked dead last. so anything higher than the basement is exceeding expectations. JWB

Yes, Friday at Miami will be revealing. But, I liked what I saw. FIU picked up the pressure in the 2nd half and UCF had trouble pushing the ball down the court. But, pretty comfortable lead. I would have liked to see them milk the clock more after going up 20 points. Some of their shots were going up with 20 seconds left on the shot clock. Game could have been shorter.

"The Hurricanes face UCF on Friday, and they will raise their Final Four banner that night as they try to pick up their second win to start the season."

No doubt #12's got to become a defensive stopper and clean up guy...either that or our TE in FB. The guy's a beast....hopefully our young guys see how important it is to bulk up and control their space with size and strength.

Everybody, and especially the frosh PG, has to learn to pass quickly and not try to dribble thru the press. It was good that FIU pressed us like they did to show Johnny what he needs to teach the guys. Based on our first game, we'll probably see pressing D's all season.

It looks like all Big12 teams won their opener except:

Kansas State lost to #21 USC
Oklahoma state lost to Abilene Christian (who?)
