Men's B-Ball Preseason Coach Poll

Wow. How bad are Tulsa, USF and Tulane to be ranked under a team with 7 scholarship players?

We had tons of scholly players last year and what good did it do us? SMU was running roughshod through the conference (til near the end when they lost a couple) with only 7 players, none of whom were All-Americans. Our exciting, experienced starting 5 could easily gel under a real coach for once. I'm surprised that ECU, who we beat twice last year, is place ahead of us.

While UCF had 11 scholarship players eligible/healthy last year (limit is 13), one that was missing was UCF's best player, BJ Taylor...so yeah, that kind of was a big deal...let alone how Tacko wasn't allowed to practice with the team during the extra summer practices & Bahamas Trip plus any Fall Camp due to one a-hole at the NCAA that refused to qualify him till 2 days before UCF's first game..so yeah, that hurt Tacko (and the team's) development big time.

Also, because Coach Jones had to kick Goodwin off the team early last summer...it was too late to add any "starter" quality players that late in the off-season.

And please do not compare the "talent" that SMU had in their Top 7 to what UCF (or even most AAC teams) had last year...only an idiot would do that.

I basically agree with you on everything. I was merely trying to compare highly-ranked SMU's talent with similarly-ranked one-and-done schools who are NBA feeders. SMU did it without pro-talent players, though they were better than UCF's.

All I meant was LAST year's team was finally deep enough that it could have run and pressed and worn down opponents. But it didn't have Larry Brown's coaching skill nor SMU's quickness to beat any top-7 AAC teams no matter how deep we were. The new coach has the skill and experience to potentially mold this year's experienced squad into a competitive force. I was there for most of UCLA's national championship seasons (often in the first row), so I have seen a few things.

Its not January yet. Keep that basketball talk to a minimum.
First game in 2 1/2 weeks! This could be year we finally become respectable and fun to watch in the AAC -- heck, Jones could even be competitive in the C-USA.

I hope we show some signs of turning the corner. My expectations are really low so it shouldn't be hard to beat them. Our starting 5 seems ok to me. Hard to get excited when I know the depth will be an issue. I have a feeling Tacko is going to be lights out in some games.

Seems right. #7-11 could end up in any order but right now we are considerably lower talent and execution than teams #1-6.

Pre-conference games spaced far apart (except tourney) and many home, so plenty of time to forge team chemistry. I'm hopeful Tank's raw talent matures, B.J. grows into a true point, A.J. strives toward his potential, Mumin finally can play a few quality minutes, Williams is better shape so he isn't blocked as often, and Chad Brown makes huge strides Dawkins will demand of him. Fortunately, Dawkins' emphasis on conditioning (like Frost's) can let starters play lots of minute.
UCF's last two coaches had starters often play 35+ minutes/game, so the depth issue is mostly about injuries!

This thread is gold with K_L and Prof going back and forth. A+. Would read again.

Like I said last year, we need to find a way to get in the top half of the league. If SMU and Houston found a way to do it then we should able to. And easier than them.

Where were we in the coaches poll last year, 9th or 10th? I think 8th is generous (without looking at the other teams) simply bc we have a new coaching staff and only 7 scholarship players.

If anyone has any insight on what type of offense and defense Johnny is going to run, I would like to read. Haven't made it to a practice, yet.

That poll is rigged by the crooked media. I know more than the experts, believe me.

Look, I know the media. Many of them are my very good friends. But they do some stupid things. Very dumb. And one of the dumbest things is doing polls. They're wrong. All wrong. They couldn't be more wrong. Love the people. Love them. But they do some dumb things. If they knew better, they would know UCF will be Great, again. I promise you that.

Surprised to see Tulsa breaking into the bottom 4 that's usually occupied by UCF, USF, ECU, and Tulane

I'm most interested in what happens at Memphis. Will they be able to turn their slide around now under a new coach and a slap in the face in their FedEx-sponsored campaign for the Big 12. They have the illustrious history, attendance tradition, and facilities. Who knows which direction they'll go.

The issue is depth (specifically number warm bodies vs actual talent)... if just ONE player gets a moderate injury (out 2-3 weeks) then the rest of the team will have to play more minutes... more minutes means = more fatigue = higher risk for injury. Therefore, I'm pretty worried about our health this season. I hope the strength and conditioning and athletic training staff have prepared these men well.

I'll take that over the previous issues, lack of talent, or more specifically, lack of athleticism and quickness to compete in the AAC. Unlike in football, the top 6 or 7 AAC basketball teams can be competitive with almost any school in the nation.

Don't worry. I still have some eligibility left and still practice on my neighbor courts monthly, if we need someone to fill in. [smoke]

They were also looking for raw meat to man the scout team. Between injuries and using so many frosh, things are thin.
