Men's Basketball Primed to Take on No. 7 Houston. 8pm ESPN2

Let’s see if Jekyl or Hyde comes out tonight.

I am guessing that, if we don’t shoot 60%+ from 3 we will lose.

Women's team won today, hopefully Coach Abe could come over and 'prime' the men's team!

WICHITA, Kansas – The UCF women's basketball team handled Wichita State in a 68-50 win over the Shockers in Charles Koch Arena on Saturday afternoon.

UCF (14-3, 6-1 AAC) scored the first five points of the game before Wichita State (11-8, 2-4 AAC) rallied to take an 8-7 lead midway through the first quarter. The Knights closed out the frame on a 6-0 run and held a 13-8 lead at the end of the period.

The Knights poured in 21 points in the second quarter to pull away and led 34-22 at halftime.

Crowd is quiet asf. Pretty pathetic compared to how we were back when i went to games 2004-2015.

Big 12 is going to be rough w/ Dawkins… need to make a change after the season
I’m thinking this is the right move as well, good or bad result. His recruits are underperforming. Since Tacko et al left in 2019 Dawkins is 39-33 (19-26).

I’m not bagging on Dawkins the person. This team is vastly inconsistent, though, but shouldn’t be. This is an extremely Senior-laden team. We have depth. As it is, he basically starts one lineup and brings in a second lineup. Prior to conference play, he (and staff) should recognize who is contributing in a game and who isn’t, and adjust accordingly. Bench kids and use that depth.

10 minutes into the first half I would have benched Mahan. There’s been 3-4 games this season I would have done that. He had that “negative” look to him: Moping, unemotional, whiny, poor shot selection, and poor shot %. He was 0-for-3 at that point. His was just a liability. Tighten up the rotation and give someone else those minutes.

Don’t get me wrong. That is a very solid Houston team that plays suffocating defense (sometimes too physical as they body into players and grab a lot as well….which wasn’t called) and moves the ball around really well on offense. They killed us on pick-and-rolls in the first half as well.

I don’t know. I just don’t see how this team makes progress this year and next. Potentially 6 guys are gone. Diong (who has been great) is gone and my hope for Reynolds stepping up isn’t happening this year. Mobley disappeared from the team. Mahan is gone. Perry is gone. Anders and Renaud are gone (why does every team “waste” a roster spot or two on some unused player(s) for like 3-4 years???….we should be using it to find someone that can contribute on the court, or at least push for time, even if they are the last few minutes a player would get. Not “feel good “ stories. We have the power of NIL. Find a way to basically make those slots scholarship slots. this should at least allow us to find better guys at the end of the bench.

Our Seniors next year are: Fuller (who saw no time last night), Green (who I really like but is quiet as a mouse), Tony Johnson Jr (who doesn’t play), and Walker (the only player I see with some leadership qualities). Even Walker is disappointing, though. That kid is a 5-star athlete and in his second full season is 9 pts and 6 rebounds per game (last year he was 7 pts and 5 rebounds…..not a big jump in productivity).

I just feel like basketball is floundering and needs change.

I know college hoops are fickle as well. Kids can look lost until “the light turns on.” but In the last 3 seasons the only player I’ve really seen go from nothing to something is Green.

Mobley and T Johnson quit team because they weren’t playing enough. Anders and Renaud don’t play. You really don’t want 15 guys playing. Most teams play 8 regulars and 2 guys get spot minutes. We only have 2 true bigs in Diong and Reynolds. Neither dominates. I’m not sure why Dawkins can’t recruit bigs but that’s why we don’t win consistently. Just jack up threes because we don’t have low post players. I think it’s time we moved on but we have to make a splash hire or we will be worse the next 2 years.

Dawkins was a splash hire and you see how that's turned out. We're going nowhere fast with him in charge and next year's roster will be depleted from the talent we have now. What we need is a great coach...from whatever level. This is going to be an important hire by Terry and the fans will probably have to be patient for a year or so (unless the new coach can bring talent with him). But patience, with the promise of significant improvement, is where we'll be and that's better than where we are now. The frustrating thing is we shouldn't be in this position but, thanks to Johnny, we are....

We’ve never been good outside of the one year we almost beat Duke. I wouldn’t blame Dawkins. Jones wasn’t good either. Before that our level of basketball just wasn’t top 40 in country. Until we get a coach that can recruit it will be the same. With NIL now, we can get a coach that has a history of getting good players. Hope Terry and crew are getting a list ready now.

Houston was definitely the superior team last night. UCF had some moments, but just got buried by talent in the 2nd half. Is that on the coach? maybe. Maybe not. I think Dawkins is a great coach. But, what will it take to reach the top? Maybe a change to the b12 will help. I have no answers, just want to win. Last night was a 'prime' time to do it and make a statement. oh well...there is always next year!

We’ve been saying next year ever since we started D1 basketball. It’s time we change that.

What are you talking about?

They are walk-ons...i.e. practice mules.

They don't take up a "scholarship roster spot".

Why?

UCF has one of the lowest basketball budgets in AAC and is in the bottom half every year in attendance...and outside 3 years ago when UCF earned an at large NCAA invite (first EVER in the program history...outside the autobids back in our TAAC/ASUN days), why SHOULD UCF be in a better position?

No money...not much fan support at 90% of our games and basically no program history of success.

Yet you think JOHNNY is the only reason why UCF is an average AAC Team?

Come on man...look at the BIG picture and you will see UCF basically deserves what they have gotten...a so-so program in the AAC at a football school.

Hey maybe we can get T-Mac to recruit and coach. Memphis did it with Hardaway. Tracy Mcgrady was a 7 time all star and one of the best point guards in the NBA.

Exactly. Use NIL to make them the equivalent of a scholarship spot, and get better quality in these last couple of roster spots. Not saying they play but do Anders and Renauld really push/compete against anybody? Doubt it. In order to become better you have to create the most competition possible.

Wait...the tiny UCF Basketball Fan base almost has zero $$$ available for basketball NIL $$$ for those that start...but you think they have enough $$ for walk-ons?

I do think once UCF joins the Big 12 (which is the #1 or #2 Basketball Conf...and WILL get better once BYU and UH especially join as well), UCF will probably see an uptick in quality walk-ons...but so many kids would rather get a full-ride to play at a lower divisional level than to be a practice mule.

There is a reason why you almost never EVER see a walk-on play meaningful minutes in Div I...unless the roster had be depleted (which has happened to UCF once or twice in the past when a basketball manager had to get some mins when Dawkins had just 6 or 7 players available).

Buck stops with Johnny. Win and everything else will take care of itself.

NIL doesn't come from season ticket holders (although maybe it could if it was grouped together as some kind of entity to provide NIL for student-athletes). I don't know how the darn thing works. It's finding businesses or people willing to work with the kids and shell out money for their own supposed financial benefit (thus benefitting the kid(s) as well). NIL allows for business creativity, from both the kids and the schools.

Penny played at Memphis so his heart is there. TM didn’t play for us so I doubt his passion wouldn’t be as high.

Yes...most businesses owned by alumni and or fan boys of said team.

Just look what A&M and UT are doing...their alumni and their businesses are leading the way with NIL.

Dawkins has never brought in a POST player(s). Without any POST game, the opposing teams will just cover you on perimeter and never let you get a shot off. Reynolds, huge disappointment
