Mike Bianchi: If O'Leary gets UCF into the Big 12, he should be AD for life

Why do people think O'Leary will get us into the Big 12, or that this is anything but a temporary role?

Big 12 expansion comes down to whether or not Texas and OU think UCF will add value long term, in revenue, exposure, and on the field, most certainly in that order. Our name doesn't matter, who our AD matters only insofar as whether or not they're effective, and our on the field performance matters less than you'd probably think.

Would tend to agree with this, but if the Big 12 is set on adding two teams, you can be certain that as many as 5 or 6 schools will be doing anything and everything to pimp themselves to Big 12 officials and school Presidents and Administrators. If you don't have a solid President and AD then you could risk being pinched out. Look at the UConn/Louisville race to get Maryland's vacated spot in the ACC. UConn was in the catbird seat, with almost all of the talking heads on ESPN ordaining as the natural replacement. Well we all know how that turned out and it was due in part to Louisville's President working his relationships with UNC and FSU's presidents along with Louisville's AD working every ACC school AD on the phone.

Bingo. In line with my thinking the day after he was announced:

"Like it or not, he is the face of UCF, not just athletics. And since he exerts so much influence anyway, they might as well give him the title until we figure out our play for getting into P5. Since football drives the bus for conference alignment, he knows as many people as any coach in America. He cements his legacy and gets his statue if he can help pull this off."

I now think my thoughts about this being temporary were wrong. He also wants to control the football succession plan by anointing Brent Key HC and he now has the platform to make that happen without conflict. He can ride off into the sunset under his own terms and timeframe.

I see what you're saying about performance, BUT, you have got to agree that with all the other things UCF brings to the table, if Football, Basketball, and Baseball were consistently is the TOP 20, that would make a difference. The audience (hence revenue) would be higher and have more potential. The demand is higher. Over?
