Monday Notebook: Why JRP Will Be Better -Marc Daniels

I'm most worried about his durability. When he doesn't have his wheels and has to rely on his arm we just weren't very threatening on offense. Plus, now we're running a different offense this year so you have to think it takes a while to get past the first level of decision-making before you get into "details" as the season progresses. Not the thing you want to be doing to any QB but our offense last season looked pretty sub-par, although we had a ton of new guys playing (especially the play-calling at times...really seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot). We'll see if that gets better this year, along with going a little more up-tempo without subbing this season.

First 6 games (Lesser competition):
5-1 Record
1,516 yards passing
11 TDs against 3 Ints
468 yards rushing and 7 TDs

Last 7 games (Better competition):
3-5 Record
1,070 yards passing
3 TDs against 5 Ints
394 yards and 4 TDs (309 of this came in two games, along with the 4 TDs; In the other 5 games he only amassed 85 yards rushing and no TDs)

Overall:
63% completion percentage for the season (this was consistent for the first 6 games versus the last 7 games)
2,586 yards passing with 14 Tds against 8 Ints
862 yards rushing with 11 TDs

His stats basically look like those of a first year starter (other than the rushing) so I guess we'll see if he makes a big jump from year 1 to year 2. That's where the biggest jump usually occurs.

We gotta have the backup Qbs in ready mode as well. Remember early in the year when JRP was dazzling us with his runs. Flipping over Dbs and into the endzone. Everyone was thinking he aint' gonna last running like that and he didn't and the most common injury on sprinting like that is a hamstring pull. Hamstrings take a long time to heal. I've pulled a hammy before running and it took me 6 months to get back to running. (i'm old now and don't run).

With that said, nobody knows for sure how we are going to do in the new Big12. The negative nancies are already on the fire-everyone bandwagon, but I prefer to wait and see. Winning is fun, losing is not, but supporting your team win or lose should be a priority.

Go Knights!

Everybody needs to chill. It took Utah 8 seasons before they played for a Pac-12 title. It took TCU 3 season to be co-conference champs. Rome wasn't built in a day but it was built properly, and lasted as an Empire for more than 300 years (at full power). That's the mindset we need to have.

As many a coach has said, "Each day you're either getting better or getting worse." We just keep focusing on "better days" and good things should come of it.

There are signs of improvement at the QB position. They cut down on their end around runs and screens so they could call more plays to pass the ball downfield. Time will tell what we really got on offense but I'm hoping being in year 2 for Plumlee will show us much more from him at the QB position.

1 Ham String pull and Tommy or Timmy has to be ready! Could happen at any time!

I'd like to see how the "Ts" could do in more than just mop-up duty. When they play for all of 5 minutes, their nerves barely get settled and they are tight, thinking, "please don't screw up." Unlike a starting QB who may screw up in the first couple of series, but settles down to have a decent game, the back-ups ' assessments are quickly made if they if don't deliver ( take him out!).

The starter gets judged on his body of work over the course of 4 quarters.

The name's Kristi--not Nancy.

According to the article posted above, "On the night, Plumlee was 10-17 for 236 yards and two passing scores. Thomas Castellanos also showcased his skills tossing a pair of touchdowns and finishing 7-13 for 105 yards."

Forgive me if I'm not aroused by a wide receiver and running back completing 58% and 53% of their passes, respectively, against a Chinese fire drill of defensive back subs.

Compare those numbers to those posted in Oxford, MS...

"Ole Miss has quarterbacks. There have been years any of the three of them would be the headlined starter for the Rebels. The arm talent showed up in the Grove Bowl. Returning starter Jaxson Dart (Red) completed 18-of-37 passes for 302 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, while rushing three times for 19 yards. Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders (Blue), who has been fighting a shoulder injury all spring, finished 19-of-27 for 265 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also carried six times for 72 yards and a score. LSU transfer Walker Howard, only a redshirt freshman, completed 11-of-13 passes for 184 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions quarterbacking with the Red and Blue squads. Howard rushed five times for 29 yards and a touchdown."

800 passing yards is a Spring Game is sexy. Having backups complete 70% and 80% of their passes and account for eight touchdowns is also sexy.

You cannot convince me that given a legitimate quarterback (Spencer Sanders for example) that UCF wouldn't contend for the Big 12 title next season.

In his defense, he was pretty banged up the 2nd half of season.

Exactly, that is why so many are concerned. He clearly showed he didn’t have the skill set to work around injuries that took away his mobility…..the same problem Culpepper had post knee injury.

Then you aren’t very smart for a coach’s wife…..a top flight QB would be the difference between 4-8 and 8-4, not 4-8 and conference contender.

We will get flat worn out on both sides of the line this year, plus it looks like we have secondary issues judging by how hard we are chasing 1 year transfers. We will be playing what 8-9 established P5 schools instead of a previous 2?

He doesn't go through his reads. He can't throw accurately on the run. He's one hamstring twinge from being on the bench. Tommy and Timmy better be ready.

This could happen and we could have a terrible year. Hope not but it's realistic.

Ye of little faith.

UCF has an SEC quarterback(/wide receiver), an SEC wide receivers room; an SEC/ACC running backs room, and an SEC/Pac-10/Mid-American/Mountain West offensive line.

What could go wrong?

LOL.....I have 36 years of faith with this school, but I can recognize a challenge when I see one.

But will still be joyful finally stepping into a big boy conference, whatever happens this Fall.

Well you have me in years. I watched a UCF game one year when it was fortunate enough to play a bowl game against a team that wasn't motivated to be there.

I have followed UCF pretty close since Gus arrived, though.

In 2012, TCU's roster was nowhere near as stacked as UCF's is in 2023. TCU opened its inaugural Big 12 season 5-1 before depth issues got the best of it in the final seven games, where it went 2-5. It was not like TCU imploded, however. It lost four conference games by a touchdown or less and posted a winning season with just 8 total transfers (only three SEC guys). UCF has five SEC transfers at wide receiver alone.

I fully expect UCF to do well in the Big 12.

How will the games be colder? Colder than Ohio and Maryland? Only difference is Thanksgiving weekend. Wont be in Florida every year.

Thought this was obvious…..no Tampa, no New Orleans, no Memphis, no North Carolina……even though the last two can get lower temps, you go stand outside in Kansas, Oklahoma, Far North Texas, Iowa, and it is bone chilling at those same temperatures…..had some projects in all these states

Agree we will do well eventually

Had Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Very similar in temps in November.

It isn’t about the temperatures, guess you haven’t spent any time in these places….again, think Tulsa and our outstanding record there.

You can’t just nitpick our record against powerhouses like Tulsa to prove your point!*

2023 Big12 will definitely be an adjustment New travel locations, new teams to get familiar with.

However, circle 2024 on the calendar. After the growing pains of the first year in the Big12, Texas & Oklahoma leave and that will open up the Big12 somewhat.

Plus, the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams in 2024 and thus opening up chances for a 2nd or even a 3rd Big12 team to get into that. a 3rd team is probably reserved for a SEC team no doubt, but you never know if the Big12 teams all are good.

UCF is in an upward trajectory. TCU is a good case study. They were in C-USA not too long ago either.

TCU conference history:
Conference USA (2001–2004)
Mountain West Conference (2005–2011)
Big East Conference (Announced in 2010, Reneged in 2011 in favor of the Big 12)
Big 12 Conference (2012–present)

UCF Conference history:
  • NCAA Division III independent (1979–1981)
  • NCAA Division II independent (1982–1989)
  • NCAA Division I-AA independent (1990–1995)
  • NCAA Division I-A independent (1996–2001)
  • Mid-American Conference (2002–2004)
  • Conference USA (2005–2012)
  • American Athletic Conference (2013–2022) (was the Big East)
  • Big 12 Conference (2023–present)

I’ve lived in PA, OH and SC. Spent time in Texas. I’m well aware of these places and don’t find 1 or 2 cold games a year to be crazy. I also left Connecticut off who we had a few times. Not much different.

UCF played @Uconn 3 times and went 2-1. With one of the wins requiring a 2nd half comeback. UConn in those 3 seasons went for a combined 6-30. UCF did struggle there outside of 2018 when they were undefeated and UConn had 0 FBS wins.

I think the 1 loss was when GOL banned heaters on the sideline.
