Bad actors(Costner) can sometimes be in good movies. And good actors (John Goodman) can sometime be in bad movies.
James Earl Jones carried Costner's sorry ass for that film. In the book Jones' character is actually JD Sallinger. It's also awkward when a black character has some giant romantic speech about how dead baseball players from the 20s and 30s point back to a better time. The film is emotionally satisfying, but I also have father issues (which is probably also why I like Wes Anderson movies) so I'm it target audience.
