Thought we should make a list of possible successors now that Kinnie is thankfully gone.

Keegan McDaniel- Mizzou analyst. Only 27 and on 247’s 30 under 30 list for 2021. Played for Gus at Arkansas State and has connections to Terry as well. Would be a home run hire. My choice and hope. Basically t-will but for offense.

Barry Lunney Jr- utsa oc. Has connections to Gus through his time as a Arkansas hs coach. Great recruiter at arkas and had to deal with 5 different qbs in 2020. Could poach because we are in big 12.

Keenan Bailey- osu analyst. Pipe dream, but is considered to be the next big thing like McDaniel. No connections to Gus.

Darrin Hinshaw - UCF analyst. Most likely option. Would keep the status quo on offense for better or worse. Might be a sentimental choice, but was mediocre at Kentucky.

Trey Holtz- wr coach at la tech. Skip’s son, but both Urban Meyer and Ryan Day were enthusiastic with praise when he was at osu and worked with qbs.

Billy Gonzales- UF WR coach. Has oc experience, knows Gus well, solid recruiter. Would lock up Emory Jones coming here.

Let's step back and marvel how GJ Kinne went from basically an intern to OC in 4 year, and has had a new job every year for years. There must be some serious flaws in hiring coaches.

2017SMUGraduate Assistant
2018ArkansasOffensive Analyst
2019Philadelphia Eagles (NFL)Offensive Special Projects
2020Hawai'iOffensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2021UCFCo-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Honeymoon period for the offense will be over next Fall. hopefully it’s way better than what we have watched most of this season Post DG injury

Agreed. Gus needs to move to a ceo role. This is his chance to bring in a great young oc to call plays. Someone like a Willy Korn or Corey Dennis. But we already know Gus won’t give up play calling. He’s going to keep the status quo and we are going to end up with a boring offense that kills our identity like this year. We need a real oc and this is the chance to get one. But realistically Gus’ ego won’t allow it unless it’s his buddy Chad Morris who failed.

so might as well look at guys who would be more who coaches than real oc.

I won’t take much from the year 1 and he is recruiting pretty well but I don’t get these guys not seeing what everyone else is seeing . but maybe it is Keene who may be a FCS tier QB. CEO still gets all the credit in the end

No one knew Kinne was coming until officially leaked. This will be same. A name not mentioned most of the time.

I like Billy Gonzales, hopefully none of our players will body slam him (Percy Harvin). On the list previously mentioned he was one of the few names I knew. Honestly, I'm not sure he has ever called plays. It is one thing to be an assistant with input, its another thing to run the entire offense.
I don't know how much influence the Mizzou guy had, but they have been pretty solid on O the few times I have watched them over the last few years. I would be very interested in him.
Honestly, unless Gus is going to relinquish play calling duties, it will be hard to get a good OC. Not saying he should or shouldn't relinquish those duties. But, if this is going to be he last go around, why not let go. Take some weight off your shoulders, relax, recruit a bit more. Still have input into the offense, but run the whole program; offense, defense, special teams, recruiting, boosters, etc... Let somebody else call the plays with your input. Be more like Saban, and less like Mullen. Develop your coaches as much as you develop your players. Your QB, RB, WR and OL coach need to be able to call plays, let go and let them takeover

How long has he been at UF? Percy Harvin doesn’t even play in NFL anymore let alone for Gators. Doesn’t sound like there is a line of suitors at his door.

I don’t think Gus is going to give up the play calling. The last time he tried it was a disaster. Gus is comfortable going back to his roots as a high school coach that is fully engaged in the game calling the plays.

It was a disaster because he hired ****ing Chad Morris, his friend. Gus is an egomaniac if he doesn’t give up play calling or isn’t forced to give it up. His offense has been trash for years and that’s because he refuses to bring in a real oc with real play calling. A young gun who can bring in more modern principals and philosophies not his buddies Chad and Chip. If he butchers this hire and goes with the status quo(Hinshaw) then we are in for a painful offense next year. If that happens then there will be serious questions that should be asked.

Now another name I would prefer would be Nate Scheelhaase. Iowa State’s best recruiter and a fast riser. He’s their wr coach, but has worked with qbs. Considered to be a star already. This guy would feast here.

also like Malcom Dixon ccu’s te coach who would bring that sexy offense here.

I agree. He said as much several times.

Y’all are crazy. We aren’t going out and hiring Iowa States best recruiter. Gus is just going to promote from within. The easiest solution is always the most likely

1. Nate has been rumored to want to leave to further his career. He won’t be oc as long as Tom Manning is there which is why he has been rumored to want to get out.

2. If we promote from within we are f ucked next year on offense. There’s a reason why bo nix didn’t want to play for Gus again and it’s because his offense is painful to play in and watch. By any metric, either old or advanced metrics, Gus offense sucks and has sucked for years. Gus is an arrogant old school coach who refuses to adapt to modern cfb. That’s why he can’t get a transfer qb to save his life. We need a innovator who can recruit. That’s why I made this list. I know Gus is just going to hire Hinshaw, but that’s the worst thing that could happen to UCF. He’s just going to hire a yes man and that’s failed every time he’s done it ie chad Morris at Auburn.

3. Hinshaw was fired at Kentucky because he can’t develop qbs. You really want that at UCF? Take off the UCF glasses and realize that if we promote from within this offense is going to be trash again.

4. We have struck out on every single offensive transfer target because they see how awful this offense is. Let’s be Frank no one wants to play or watch the Gus offense. He has the opportunity to bring in an exciting coach. If he doesn’t and falls back into his old habits then fully expect our offensive recruiting to fall off a cliff.

I didn’t say I wanted anything. I’m just saying Gus is going to take the easiest path and do nothing

Told you it’s a waste of time predicting our coaches. It’s never the guys people are speculating.
Anyone know any more about him? I have he was the head football coach at Troy University from 2019–2021. Lindsey was previously the quarterbacks coach at Troy during the 2010 season. Lindsey has also previously served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Southern Mississippi (2014–2015), Arizona State University (2016) and Auburn University (2017–2018)

According to NCAA stats, in 2016-2017 our offense was ranked #113, and the next season (2017-2018) #5. Respectively, for those same seasons our defense was ranked #39 and #93. So when our offense was blisteringly good in 2017 our defense suffered (mostly because we scored so quickly). The other important stat of note here is Turnover margin, of which we were #58 and #2. In 2017, we overcame the #93 defense by being ball-hawks, which gave us extra possessions, and took away possessions from our opponents.

Under Huepel our offenses were ranked #5, #2 and #2, while the defenses were ranked #95, #32, and #123. Our turnover margin was #5, #27, and #5. I can't really provide any interpretation for these stats under Heupel. There seems to be no correlation. Our offense was potent, our defense mostly sub-par but we were very good at ball-hawking. We just seemed less of a "team" for 2020...which isn't a good technical term but I don't think analytics can account for "team" either.

In 2021 our offense is ranked #67. Our defense is ranked #53. Our turnover margin is #34. Not bad considering completely new staffs on offense and defense, and paying a true freshman QB who is not a stud right out of the gate. Lots of new contributing players as well.

The point I am trying to make is showing some stats, and then providing a bare minimum of context, knowing there are many, many other factors that contribute to success or failure on the field. I think if we have improved QB play, whoever that may be, we can be a much better team. I don't think it necessarily requires changing our scheme a lot. We also have players learning a much different offense than under Heupel. Same with the defense (although I am not claiming there are big scheme changes or anything on defense....I'm not smart enough on defenses to know if the changes are significant or not).

Terry hired Gus and we just have to see how it all works out. I'm certainly not going to throw in the towel after a 9-4 season, in the first season.

BTW, I don't disagree that finding an ace OC wouldn't massively change things for the good. I'm just aying if we don't, I don't think we're screwed. O'Leary was really bad at recruiting the QB position but once he hired Taffe in 2009, that guy turned every QB (and thus the teams) into winners. 4 different QBs in 6 season, and we had team success for 5 of those 6 seasons:
2009: 8-5; Grad transfer Hodges; If Hodges didn't play we probably would have won 2-4 games. We got crushed in our bowl game by Rutgers.
2010: 11-3; true freshamn Godfrey; Conference title; Bowl victory over Georgia
2011: 5-7; Godfrey and Bortles split time...never a good thing.
2012: 10-4; Bortles; Lost Conference title game; Won bowl game.
2013: 12-1: Bortles; Conference title; Fiesta Bowl victory.
2014: 9-4: Holman; Share of conference title. Got beat in bowl game.

As a note, under Lindsey @Auburn, in 2017 their offense was ranked #26 (we got to see that offense up and personal in the Peach Bowl), and in 2018 #78. At Troy in 3 seasons their offenses were ranked #18, #65, and #108. That is not a good trend but I know nothing about that overall team (offense, defense, recruiting, etc...).

At Southern Miss he developed Nick Mullens, who still plays in the NFL.
