More than half a million people are homeless each night in the United States, a new White House report has found. And nearly half of them are concentrated in one state: California. All told, 47% of all unsheltered homeless people nationwide — meaning those who sleep in areas not meant for habitation, such as sidewalks, parks, cars and abandoned buildings, rather than in shelters — live in the Golden State.

i thought california cared about these people?

Makes total sense. The coastal areas of California are some of the most temperate (climate speaking) areas in the U.S. I'm never surprised by the homelessness situation in San Francisco, etc. If I was homeless for an extended period of time I'd seriously consider finding a way to get out there. You're not going to freeze to death or burn up. That said, there's only so much that can be done as far as sheltering goes. I think "Californians" do care about these people; but, that "care" can only go so far. The article only seems to address the "unsheltered" homeless. I'd be curious to see how CA ranks in terms of care/potential care for the homeless. I'd be willing to bet that they rank up there at the top as far as programs, aid and sheltering go. Of course, the people of California pay for it with their tax dollars.

best State to sleep outside with no AC or Heat.

Glad they are there, can we ship them a bunch more, It will help them with census #s.

Yep. This is a California problem because of the weather. Many of those homeless have come from other states.

lol

Did the weather in CA suddenly become great? Is this a new thing that CA has great weather? It seems to me like that's always been the case, yet the homeless crisis in CA has suddenly surged due to idiotic policies put in place by the idiots who run CA that openly encourage homelessness and accept it rather than discouraging it. It's not like the homeless population on the east coast suddenly woke up in 2015 and said "Hey, I think CA has great weather these days!"

Here's a leftie writing on the failures of lefties in CA on this topic:

You can criticize policy as well, but to act like weather doesnt play a factor is an insincere argument. Of the 4 states with the highest amount of homelessness, three are Cali, Texas, and Florida, all warm weather and populous states, and Florida and Texas certainly arent liberal strongholds. New York is the only exception, and of course it is also a very populous state.

FL has homelessness. We do not have massive homeless tent cities where there is piss and shit all over the streets like LA and SF have that is causing a public health concern for all of the diseases being spread due to said piss and shit.

NPR interviewed an LA shop owner the other day who is ready to pack up and leave since he has to deal with a homeless degenerate living 5 feet from his door, doing drugs, and shitting on the sidewalk mere feet from where his customers have to enter his business. And the cops in LA can't do a thing about it.

I just got back from a four day work trip to LA. The homeless issue is out of control trip. Hundreds of tents just line the sidewalks all over the place. You can’t walk in downtown LA on the sidewalks because they are blocked. The smell is disguised, smells like piss everywhere.

My favorite thing was the old broken down crappy RV’s in the side of the road in Marina Del Ray. It is an environmental issue, it’s a health issue and it’s getting worse.

Downtown San Jose has a square where there are cardboard mansions. I think they also started wheeling out those small homes for people to live in. Certain areas in the state make it a lot easier to be homeless. When drugs are easy to get and food and shelter are close and free (and now some places are creating safe houses to do drugs in so that you don't die of an overdose), the homeless crisis isn't going to get any better anytime soon.

For some people it's a choice, but some people have homelessness dropped on them like a curse. It's hard to know how to help them.

We arent really talking about the same thing. How you handle homelessness is different then why you have homelessness to begin with. Again, you can certainly criticize some of the ways they handle it I dont disagree on that. But that doesnt change the fact that the climate also makes it more of an ideal place to live if you are living on the street. That does contribute to the actual numbers.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

You just told me that there's homelessness in TX and FL due to similarly good climates to sleep outdoors in. Now you're saying that the only reason TX and FL don't have homeless tent cities is because of...…...CA's weather?

No. CA has a public health crisis due to homelessness due to policies that they've put in place which absolutely have contributed to encouraging homelessness or encouraging people to travel there to live homeless. CA has codified it as a "right" to live on a sidewalk. That is largely the problem and why (as I said above) many citizens have had it with LA or SF since their livelihood is being jeopardized by vagrants shooting up or taking a shit on their businesses' doorstep.

How to help them? Getting them cleaned up, jobs, etc. Unfortunately the left elite think you can just give them something for free and it improves. Why do they have signs to not feed the bears in the woods?

Of course those Hollywood liberal types don't actually give their money or time to help the cause.

Republicans could whip poverty stricken California into shape. Give them control and they'll have that hell hole state looking like the lush paradice of Mississippi in no time. Dems just don't know how to run states like republicans do. I'll take the economic hub Arkansas over disgusting failing New York any day.

The homeless situation has completely destroyed Venice beach. I was there in 1993 and again last year. I was shocked. It was disgusting. There was the smell of urine everywhere. Completely ruined

There was a time in the not so distant past that California was run by conservatives and it didn't have problems with homelessness like this.

The real issue with California is that the people in power seem content with having a two-class society. It's one thing to allow people to live in tents on the sidewalk and do drugs, it's quite another to encourage it.

Let's be real. There's a lot of issues in this country. MAGA hat chuds on this board are only concerned about homelessness to the extent it allows them to shit on democrats. You think any of these people actually care about the homeless in California?

I hate to agree......but I somewhat do. There are people who use homelessness as a way to score political points, there's no doubt about that.

I think, and this is just my opinion based on no empirical evidence, that Californias problem with homelessness has more to do with a lack of affordable housing. In other states it is probably tilted more to drug addiction and mental illness. The median home price in San Francisco is 1.3 million bucks. It's ridiculous to think the the median income in San Francisco can support a 1.3 million dollar house, so it stands to reason that they have a lot of homeless people.

lol do you think liberals give two shits about the homeless or the poor? There's a reason that socialists like Sanders and his braindead followers give absolutely nothing to charity or put out their own time to help people in their communities. Why give from your own coffers when you can go into hysterics about how the government should be taxing everyone else (not me!) more to provide x, y, and z for the poor - or whatever.

That's how liberals think. "I vote for morons who promise the government will do everything so that I don't actually have to"

I work with our Parish outreach group every Sunday which involves helping the poor directly with our own money and time. The resident hate filled anti-religious left wing bigots on here spend more time shitting on that than they do having ever lifted a finger for a poor person. I bet you're in the same exact boat.

GTFO of here with your bullshit.
