No more of this $1.8 million base salary bunk. We need to incentivise these guys to win.

I propose the following.

Year 1:
$2.3 million base (new coach gets a pass in year 1)

Year 2 and on:
$300k base
$200k bonus - each P5 team we beat
$100k bonus - not losing to FCS
$200k bonus - win 6 games
$300k bonus - win 9 games
$100k bonus - win 10 games
$200k bonus - beat USF
$400k bonus - win conference
$300k bonus - win bowl game
$200k bonus - meeting graduation and GPA standards
$1 million bonus - making access bowl

$3.3 million on the table each year, which includes making access bowl. We can afford that if we make it. He determines how much of that he gets by how he and his staff perform. A year like this he would be lucky to walk away with $500k.

And you will get a garbage coach. Any coach with 1/2 a brain is going to take a 1mil locked in job and another 500k to 1mil in bonus and say screw you.

Okay. Well adjust the numbers to what makes sense. With my numbers the coach would still make $1 million with a pretty crappy season. I'm not sure I would want a coach that would balk at this deal. It's pretty low damn standards to make $1 million! Simply win 6 games in the AAC?

Here is the thing you might not understand about incentives - they are designed to draw better performance out of your employees. Define a garbage coach. Do you mean a MAC coach? I think they take the job seeing 6 wins nets them at least what they are making now.

When you pay someone $2 million even when they suck...not a whole lot of motivation to fix the sucking.

No respectful coach is going to take that deal. No thanks.

Why not? Up the stakes then and make worth $4 million if they complete all their objectives. We need to think outside the box here. The current philosophy of constantly writing $2 million checks win or lose is not working for us. I'm not trying to lure Saban away with the deal. Rod Carey (NIU) currently makes $400k. He wouldn't take a job that more than doubles his pay if he just wins 6 games? Even with that, the base salary I'm offering is basically what he makes total at NIU.

Matt Campbell (Toledo) $482k. Pete Lembo (Ball State) $503k. Shoot, even Bryan Harsin (Boise State) $1 million could probably be swayed with this deal. Win 6 games and make what you make at Boise. Have successes similar to what you've been having at Boise and at least triple if not quadruple your money. What's to lose?

Almost all coaches get bonuses based on performance. However, the base pay usually matches the prestige of the program where they are coaching. Plus, no coach wants to mortgage his future based on how well 18 year old kids perform on the field.

We'll never know unless we try...but if a coach from a MAC school could come here with a base salary that matches what they make now (which would only come into play if they went 0-12), I fail to see the downside or the "mortgaging his future" you refer to.

I agree. Its obvious this program is more bark than bite when it comes to impressing the P5. Why pay a coach an exorbitant amount of money only to become a team P5 fans perceive as warm up fodder and/or the worst in FBS. I also agree about the academics. Its been important to them i'd increase that part as well. The point is put your money where your mouth is when it comes to promising your fans a step to the next level. Lets be honest if we're gonna be stuck in G5 purgatory.
