As you all know COVID hit me hard. It's 2022 and I am thinking about training for a Mountain to Sea bike ride across NC in October. I upgraded my Specialized Epic drive train from SRAM 1x11 to SRAM Eagle Electronic shifting 1x12 with a 52 tooth top chain ring on the rear cassette.

My Epic back in 2016 was a $6,500 bike and my local dealer said that bike today goes for over $9,000. So, I figured upgrading the drive train for a little more than a grand would be a deal today. I can't wait for the weather to get into the 40s to test it out.

Well it looks pretty badass, but do you have a basket on the front?

Is it a Huffy?
😂 😂 😂

Um ,no . It's a Specialized Carbon Fiber Epic World Cup Elite. It was my dream bike and after my folks passed I inherited very little money, enough to pay some bills ,but I took some of it and bought this bike back in 17. It's a great cross country mountain bike. Very comfortable. That's why I want to put cards in the spokes . Lol it's the irony of it .

I love stories like this. It's proof that the simple things in life are the ones that bring you the most joy.

Old school I like it. Need light with the mini generator that rides on tire too.
I remember getting one of those as a kid for my first ten speed bike..we had summer night challenges on who could get their bike light the brightest . Lol. No wonder there weren't a lot of fat kids growing up in the 70s and early 80s . It was the time you had to be home by 9 and before video games stole the souls of our youth and turned them into drones on the couch . 😆

Wow, a significant upgrade! I've heard a lot about SLAM Eagle Electronic shifting 1x12, they say it's one of the best things on the market, but I know it costs about $600

I tested it out last weekend at Tsali trails near me. The place was sticky muddy . With that said the electronic shifting is the BOMB! Boom as Gus would say.

Sweet!

I'm not a bicycle enthusiast, but when I was in grade school back in the 90s, for a science project, I had the idea of a two-wheel drive bicycle, as in the pedals/chains some how operated both the rear and front tires... It was an awesome concept, at least in my opinion.

And considering that your bike costs about 9 thousand dollars, most likely you are a professional, or this is your hobby, haha. I recently came across an article on this site bikemountain.me about the best budget gravel bikes. I'm thinking about buying one of the models for $ 1300. Do you think it's worth buying such a model, or is it worth saving up more money and not rushing?

Awesomesauce! Now to be seflish ...

Since I live rural now, with plenty of inclines, I was thinking of getting a bike ... something high 3 figures, or low 4 figures, if an option. Basically something light, can handle my fat @$$, but doesn't have to be the lighest or the fastest.

I'm only going to ride it on the weekends when I'm at home, so I don't want to start dropping much more than $1K into it.

Walmart sells Huffys and Murrays for under a hundred bucks. They even let you ride them up to the checkout as a test drive.

Again ... I'm looking for high 3 or entry 4 figures ... not that entry 3 figures trash that doesn't last.

There has to be some entry-level, amateur solutions that don't just sell mass manufactured steel tubing with a chain that is crap.
