I love what I'm hearing about the talent level and demeanor of the new Dr. Phillips 2017 QB. But how does his recruitment mesh with the 2016 Hawaii QB recruit? Two talented QB's brought in only a year apart...is that good timing, or is it the norm for program recruiting?

And now that we have like 7 ...? The neat thing about the Oregon system, is you run twice as many plays, so everyone gets experience in scrimmages and games. Also, younger QBs will transfer out, like they do at FSU and UF once they are told they will remain backups. The system is the star, not the players so good athletes rack up superstar stats once the entire squad buys in and masters the schemes.

Thanks for the insight. I understand a little better now. I guess it is not at all like pros with typically no more than 2 or 3 QB's on a roster... since there is built regular turnover due to graduation and eligibility periods.

Plus there are injuries due to QBs running, so you need players.

Even a HC has no clue on who will win the starting job in another 1-3 years...let alone potentially dealing with injuries.

Frost hasn't even had 1 practice with a QB he has recruited at UCF (all those QB's here in the Spring were here previously), and with Holman and Patti both Seniors...he needs to build up 4-5 QB's that he has recruited for his system at UCF.

Odds are he will end up signing at least 2 QB's come Feb (verbals are nice but they are not official signees) and at least 1 QB (if not 2) in the Feb 2018 Class.

You really need at least 3-4 QB's to find THE ONE that can get the job done in your system...let alone develop others at the ready in case something happens to your #1 QB.

Remember, in the NFL...you can continue to sign QB's anytime...let alone make trades for some...hence why they only have 3 on their roster.

In college, you obviously can't do that...hence why HC's really like to have 4-5 QB's (that THEY recruited for their own system), with at least 1 red-shirting for the future.

You always want at least 5 QBs. I believe it was Memphis years ago lost 3 QBs in one game. Then a few will not progress their game from high school to college. 85 scholarships so you want depth at every position.

Yeah, you never know how any of these kids are going to pan out (Pete Dinovo) so you bring many and you weed out the ones that can't cut it.

Plus, compared to the NFL, with scholarships and walk-ons you've got 30 plus more players- roster spots- than NFL.

Any QB who wants to play FBS football should be prepared to compete for his position. Imagine if we hadn't recruited Bortles because we already had Rob Calabrese and Jeff Godfrey.

Rob Calabrese ...perfect example of GOL himself recruiting (or doing a favor). Nothing against Rob personally.

Yet everyone on the board wanted GOL to recruit and sign the record holding QB Pete DiNovo and he did.

Hint: Not all recruits pan out (actually, if you can bat 50%, that's pretty darn good).

UCF batted 100% with Bortles (Conf Title winning QB, BCS Winning QB) and battled 93% with Godrey (Conf Title Winning QB, Conf Freshmen of the Year, turned into a solid WR and GOL taught him life lessons after an old rapper told him to quit the team/drop out of UCF...yet he grew up and finally listened to GOL).

Why continue ad nauseam to focus on those that didn't pan out exactly like everyone wanted to?

Meanwhile...RC was a great teammate that showed that never giving up (even after 2 season ending injuries...last being career ending) that one can still achieve their life goals (Graduate, HS Coach, Grad Asst, now a college coach).

still think Hawaii QB will be the guy once he puts on the weight, has the instincts to be a big time playmaker

If Dr. Phillips recruit red-shirts he will be two years behind Hawaii recruit who should play this season.

Also, we need more than one QB ready to go in this system just like Ohio State had 3 starting QBs with Urban Meyers offense and all three started games.

Don't you think the Hawaii will be redshirted too? He is barely 170 lbs.

I think Hawaii will redshirt this year. He is way too small for D1 ball just yet. A year would do him good for physical and system development. Also, it could be a waste to burn his redshirt just to split time with Holman. I see this year as Holman #1, with Patti & Kruczek battling for #2.

Interesting thought. It brings in experience and "buys time" for the new arrival QB's to develop. I just wonder if Frost is thinking that way?
He is. He recruited a bunch of JUCO studs in the last cycle but none of them took the bait. Maybe once they see the offense in action and what pieces are in place it'll be easier to get someone.

Kruczek was the surprise of spring. Starting out last on a long depth chart, he showed he was a game player before 25K fans! Even connected long to a 3rd string converted TE. Don't count out a coach's son from working his way into the starting lineup this fall. Unlike GOL, Frost won't be slow to use the hook if he spots chemistry and field generalship.

Would love to see Kruczek excel. His father was a good QB coach and offensive coordinator. I am sure he has been coached up. It would be a great story for all involved.
