I know Wayne mentioned it in the Putin thread, but the new 3-on-3 in OT is effing awesome. I was at the game last night and the OT period felt like playoff hockey. Instead of those guys sitting back and playing safe for 5 minutes, the OT was full of breakaways, great scoring opportunities and amazing saves.

It was so much fun that I'd be willing to watch a full game of that!

I doubt there will be very many double OTs and even less shoot outs. Even if Tampa had lost, I would still say that I love the new rule. Its extremely exciting.

Well, there hasn't been overtime beyond the 5-minute period for the regular season in the modern era (you can have multi-OT games in the playoffs), but I agree that we'll definitely see fewer shootouts. I saw some funny tweets about the 3-on-3 and my favorite was:

3 on 3 has proven to generate a LOT more goals without having to go to the shootout....which is a novelty that has well worn off.

THAT.WAS.AWESOME.

Honestly, this might be the best thing the NHL has done in a long time. I was hanging by my balls watching that action last night. There were probably 10 scoring opportunities within the first 1:30 of the overtime.

This is going to bode well for a team like TB who has tons of fast guys who can score.

There's going to be tons of breakaways in OT this year due to 3v3 rules.

I love the 3 on 3, it was much better than last year. While I enjoyed watching the the Chicago Rapists lose their first home game, I enjoyed them beating the NY Non-islanders for home opener in their new basketball arena home.
