All off season this phrase was used to describe JRP's progress as a QB. From what I saw last night we have the same JRP as last year.

1. He is an amazing athlete who can just flat out out perform weaker competitors.

2. Poor decisions caused 3 turnovers.

3. He ****ing refuses to slide! He is our only experienced QB (although Timmy looked good last night) and he initiates contact needlessly? The play where thier safety was running him out of bounds a d he lowered his helmet for 1 extra yard? Or the hurdle?

3. Still has a problem missing throws. Either overthrows or underthrows balls a lot.

We saw what happens last year when this JRP goes up against a defense that he can't out athlete. We lose. I hope I'm wrong but this is a queasy feeling after a 50 point win.

2. I don't think the fumble was a poor decision, it was because he wasn't protecting the ball.
3. I saw him run out of bounds several times to avoid a hit, hopefully the coaches will tell him about. He won't last 12 games if he doesn't slide.
4. I also saw him make some good throws. The lob pass into the endzone was underthrown, needed to throw it to the pylon.

JRP is the same JRP. Again, our ceiling is 6-6. Bowl is the goal.

I actually prefer Timmy out there. The offense just felt different during his limited time.....more..."normal".

You make valid points, and I don't disagree overall. But some positives are that he was better at going through his reads and he spread the ball around. If he gets even better at that, recognizes and makes the easy throws, he'll cut down on the turnovers. JRP is a cannon but unfortunately sometimes he's a loose cannon and if he doesn't fix that he won't be an elite college QB.

You forgot to mention he processes (goes through his progressions) too slowly at times. Against an SEC opponent the first touchdown pass to Xavier was an easy pick 6.

Agree 100%. He still stares down receiver 1 and if covered instead of stepping up in the pocket…he runs

The receivers bailed him out multiple times with fingertip grabs and stretches, don't recall many if any drops. I think you will see a lot of defenses play him similar to how they did last year, dare him to throw. Navy and Duke did that and they had bottom tier pass defenses.

Mechanics are still raw. He still doesn't fully rotate with his follow through causing passes to sky high.

We don't have any other option at this point. Gus is going to play him until he can't play. That said, he doesn't have to be great, just better-than-average but his best stat for the season has to be turnovers, and he was responsible for 3 yesterday, which doesn't bode well for our success. He can't have the dumb turnovers. Those are "win killers" once playing better competition.

My friend who is an Ole Miss alum was impressed in the difference since his early days. There has been progress, but it's obvious he will just never be a great passer. On his best days, he is just above average I would say. He can make the occasional great throw, but that's maybe 1 per game. He seems to not understand how to adjust the velocity using trajectory and instead just noodle-arms balls that are flat, trying to make them simply fly slower. It's weird.

The good news is I don't think we need him to be a great passer to win games. We need him to be more careful with his running and understanding when a play is dead so he doesn't force anything. It might just be this overconfidence thing he has because he's just used to being the best athlete on the field for his entire life. I hope one day he learns that only gets him so far because there's always someone better out there. I don't have high hopes that he will, however.

JRP is improved. I think we need some more data points before we can make a final answer. But he definitely looks smarter out there.

He's definitely more comfortable spreading the ball around but his propensity to turn the ball over has to get fixed (cue Hinshaw). This was the third straight game dating back to last season where he fumbled the ball and the fifth game of his two-year career at UCF where he both lost a fumble and threw a pick. And the pick in the red zone is a real no-no. So, he's got to continue to improve these next 2 games (this week especially against Boise) and protect the ball when we start the conference schedule. He can't be a turnover machine when we travel to KS ST.

Man, I would really like to agree with you but just don’t see it. I was there and could see the whole field. He missed reads and was not going through progressions. Receivers were shaking their coverage and visibly getting frustrated when JRP couldn’t see them.

Also, wtf was our starter in during the 4th quarter and up by a million points??

I agree, he made poor decisions on the two interceptions. The first should never have been thrown (triple coverage) and the second was aimed and should have been over the top. Those will cost games with better competition. Other than that he played well. Harvey ran well and many others gave good performances, Cellisar was a beast.

Told you guys all off season to not expect much improvement from a 5th year QB that is a part timer. The BEST thing that we can do for him is improve play calling to better suit what he can do, which was better last night.

Only a matter of time until the injuries set in since he just can’t avoid sports center type runs, jumps, and flips.

Just reminds me how smart Bortles was as a runner.

Those three turnovers were one bad decision, one bad throw that he probably makes nine times out of ten in practice and then not protecting the ball. Common mistakes.

The question will be if these mistakes are amplified against better teams. My guess is they will be. JRP has all the tools to get us eight wins this year. He has soooo much talent surrounding him that he doesn’t have to be amazing to run a stellar offense.

Any great season for UCF has required a lot of skill and a good amount of luck. Be patient and let’s see how the ball bounces for UCF this year.

That's a concern. Becoming more and more evident that there was nothing Keene or someone else could have shown that would have changed Malzahn's mind. Now it's whether he sticks with wanting to have the next QB just be the best athlete.

I see a difference. NOT DAY AND NIGHT. He can pass for 20 to 25 yards. He's going through his reads. But his throwing is still off. You want to see passing, Timmy McClain has an accurate rifle!!!!

EXACTLY WOZ

It's in his blood to jump over people like a mad man! Damn he can run though, fast and lateral. He's getting out of bounds without getting hit. I didn't see any sliding to get down. Frustrating!
