Didn't the governments provide money for research for most of these companies that ended up making lots of money? They wont have any issues finding other companies in the future.
 
Moderna had already waived their patent rights in the midst of the pandemic. Anyone looking to copy their mRNA technology has a lot more to do beyond a public patent. And any viable vaccine short term to halt the pandemic would have had to have been in the works for a year by now to come to market. So the decision is largely going to be a symbolic one with no realized effect.

Our government promised to purchase an amount of units and ease the regulatory burden. The companies had to invest in their development and production.

As for development, this would allow Chinese manufacturers to copy the vaccine and turn around and sell it in the US with no ability for the US manufacturers to sue. Yes, trials will take awhile but this is going to be like the flu shot. Bottom line is it should be the company’s decision and not an edict from the President.
