Check out Michigan's FB home schedule. One can only dream. First five games at home, only 4 away games and on the back end they never have to go on the road for 2 games in a row. One day I hope we
reach this level but of course in a power conference.

I understand with the tough road games I'm more so speaking of the 5 straight home games and no back to back road contest. The schedules are intenionally made this way for success. Ohio State and UF are no different. They pay lower level teams to come in so they can pad their schedules ensuring bowl eligibilty or better each year. I know their conference games can be tough but never do they challenge themselves outside of conference play.

Certainly helps when you can play ALL non-conf games at home...as almost every team in the nation knows this except UCF's past full-time AD Stansbury....as teams generally win more games at home than they do on the road...which generally leads to better records/seasons/more ticket sales/more donations and can lead to and/or better post-season play.

I know Frost wants UCF to begin to play 7 home games soon (3 non-conf home games, only 1 on the road)...but odds are...that may not become a reality till maybe after Frost is already moved on from UCF (i.e. UCF scheduling 3 non-conf games at home in say 2019 or 2020).

FSU and Miami didn't get to where they are by playing an all-home patsy OOC schedule. We don't need to be a wuss program. Michigan and others like them can because they already have street cred. You've got to earn the position they are in and until we are in a P5 conference and win some major hardware that can't be the way we proceed.

No they didn't...but its a totally different age/industry today.

Just because Frost wants to play 3 out of the 4 non-conf games at home...doesn't mean UCF has to be a "wuss" program or schedule.

To win "hardware" (get ranked, win conf championships, etc...), winning GAMES, regardless where they play is most important.

Boise State generally doesn't play Top 10 teams on the road...and most of the time, they only play 1 P5 program per year (and many times, its not even a Top 25 team), while UCF seems to play 2 P5 teams frequently and even 3 P5 teams (like next year).

It would be great to win our OOC games at home every year, but who wants to be Marshall? Puffball, puffball, 1-AA, puffball.

The only way we are going to get 3 home games in this day and age is if 2 of them are the South Carolina State's and Western Carolina's of the world. What is more attractive to recruits, playing a OOC schedule that includes Maryland, Georgia Tech and Texas, or one where the headliner is FIU? Which schedule are you more willing to pay to go see? Also, we are not contractually obligated to lose to the P5 teams. We could be a pretty good football team and go out there and win some of those games. We might win some and we will probably lose some, but we shouldn't be afraid of competition. First, it gets you ready for conference play. Good teams will expose your weaknesses and show you where you need to improve. Don't wait for conference play to find out. Second, running away from competition makes you yellow. It sends a message to the fanbase and to the players that you don't believe you can compete against the big boys. As good as Marshal has been the past few years playing a nobody schedule and winning a lot of games, have they seen an uptick in recruiting?

And that is why they are no longer discussed as an expansion option. They are a great program but to be the man, you gotta beat the man.

This!. 100% agree. Great post.

FIU/FAU & GA State/Southern should be a mainstay on our schedule along with 2 P5 schools. We also need to get into a kick off classic in Atlanta and the Citrus Bowl.

Yes, I know FiU has beaten us twice, but those schools that you have mentioned are terrible. Why should crappy schools be the mainstay of our schedule if we can get a quality team to play us home or away??

I think you have to pick your poison. Which is better, loading up on cup cakes like Boise and over time you learn how to be a consistent winner than you challenge yourself more often after you have built a reputation for winning. Or you go the route of what we have done with a couple of big seasons with a few big wins but consistently lose to P5 programs. I think you have to establish an identity for your program. We had a tough nose identity under Oleary but we were never known as that traditionally winning program.

I honestly think we are putting a little to much emphasis on playing lots of P5 programs and beating them. I'm for playing one P5 out of conference each season and the rest winnable home games. I think winning breads winning. You build an expectation of not losing then you start to increase the difficulty of your schedule.

One advatange Boise always had in getting games against Mediocre P5 teams is because Boise isn't a threat to them in any way. Teams don't have to recruit against Boise and on the west coast it's tough for P5 teams to fill their schedule as there aren't as many football programs on the west coast. That helped Boise as well. UCF has built in advantages that are a threat to any team on the East Coast. Thats why it's so hard for us to schedule average P5 programs. We are having to schedule top P5 programs which feel they can beat us even though they know we will give them a good game. And they make us play them at their house first so they can cancel the contract for the second game if they feel the need.

So I say more winnable home games to build the rep of winning with one P5 home or away game each season. If we are going to bowl games each year with a 10 win record in the American we will more than likely always be playing another P5 team in a bowl game any way. And some seasons hopefully we are blessed to make it to a New Years 6 bowl. But you have to have the wins to get to New Years 6 games and you can't get there by losing 2 out of conference games to P5 each year. You can get there however by playing cup cakes and winning 11 to 12 games.

My opinion......

Houston got to a New Year's Day P6 Bowl Game by playing 7 regular season home games and just 1 non-conf road game.

UH's non-conf schedule last year:

Div I-AA TENNESSEE TECH
@ Louisville
TEXAS STATE
VANDERBILT

UH ended up with 8 home games last year as they hosted the AAC Conf Championship Game.

This year in 2016, UH will have 7 games in Houston:

OKLAHOMA (NRG Stadium)
LAMAR
LOUISVILLE

Their only non-conf road game is in San Marcos, TX vs Texas State.

They are playing oklahoma and loserville...big programs, so they aren't hiding from competition by putting together a cupcake schedule. I predict there will be way more oklahoma fans at NRG field than Houston fans (who didn't even have the draw we had last year going 13-1). It is a nuetral site game. It's a shame we can't seem to get more mid-majors to sign home-and-homes with us. Glad we were able to do this with Maryland and GaTech. Houston is back to only six home games in 2017, 2018, and 2021 (only have two OOC games listed for 2019 and 2020).
If they run the table they could be the first G5 to get into the CFP. They have to win every game and the people they beat have to end up making noise as well (especially Oklahoma and Loserville).

They are playing oklahoma and loserville..

And last year, they played Louisville and Vandy...and still got 3 out of their 4 non-conf games at home.

UL went 7-5 in regular season last year and Vandy went 4-8.

Why can't UCF strive for that? (7 home games)

UH hosted 7 games in 2014 too:

@BYU
UTSA
Div I-AA GRAMBLING STATE
UNLV

UH hosted 7 games in 2013:

@ UTSA
BYU
RICE
Div I-AA SOUTHERN

In 2012, UH played 8 games in Houston, 7 at home:

TEXAS STATE
LA TECH
NORTH TEXAS
@UCLA
RICE (Reliant Stadium, Conf Game)

That's a whole lot of sh_t games nobody cares about, including their own fans. Those are like our home schedule last year, which was the worst home schedule I can remember in the last decade. I had zero friends who wanted to go to any of that garbage, win or lose. I've already got people psyched to come out and get hammered for the Maryland game, even though we sucked last year. In the end, I'm a fan and will show up regardless but if we want to excel as a program And bring in more fans I just feel like you can't schedule conservatively like that.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with a few points. First, nobody knew who Boise was until they beat OU. Since then have they been world beaters against P5 teams. I would say they are average. After beating OU, Zabransky and company got handled at Georgia to start the next year, something like 35-14, but it felt more like 49-7. They have won some, but they have also lost some.

Boise is a threat to teams on the west coast because a lot of the players they recruit are being recruited by mid level west coast P5 teams. The kids they go after that P5 teams go after are at the top of BSUs recruiting list, while those same kids in many cases are the fallbacks for P5 teams. Also, teams on the west coast know they can just as easily lose to BSU, same disadvantage we have. Yet teams still play them. We got Maryland, Michigan, Texas, and Georgia Tech to schedule us. Though with future scheduling, I do agree that getting home and homes will be harder to come by, especially if we win some of these future games. Then again, maybe some of the schools in P5 conferences would like to come down here and recruit. You never know.

As another poster mentioned with Houston, they have 2 P5 teams, a Sun Belt team, and an FCS team this coming year. To me, that is the best way to schedule. Try to get two P5 teams, when you schedule 3 or 4 years out you don't know if a team is going to be middle of the pack or a dominant team, but you hope for the best. The other 2 OOC games should be some combination of 2 from MAC/SunBelt/CUSA and an FCS with at least one coming from the first group, if not both. Maybe open up with an FCS/MAC/Sunbelt/CUSA school, then a P5 school, then a MAC/Sunbelt/CUSA and then either start conference play and play another P5 later in the season or have them for the 4th game of the season. Which is what our schedule was this year. Had we been half the team we thought we were going to be, we probably would have been 3-1 entering conference play.

...I'm a fan and will show up regardless but if we want to excel as a program And bring in more fans I just feel like you can't schedule conservatively like that.

Yet Houston finished ranked in the Top 10...bringing with them legends of fans that followed them to Atlanta and now heading into this season (which says something as historically, UH has never drawn many fans, regardless who they played).

Key is to get fans because UCF is playing...which so many other teams are able to do...and I think this year just might prove that.

Right now UCF has only 6 home games a year...its easy for almost anyone to block out those dates 6 months in advance and show up if they want to help support the program.

I think plenty will do that this year...and hopefully more next year and so on...and soon, UCF will have 7 home games to attract fans to BHNS.

2 years ago, 3 AAC teams had 7 home games (3 out of their 4 non-conf games at home)

2016, HALF of the AAC (Cinci, UCONN, USF, Temple, Memphis, Houston) will have 7 home games this season (UH playing 7th game in Houston 6 miles from campus).

Memphis, ECU & USF already have 7 home games scheduled for 2017...while ECU & Memphis have 7 home games scheduled for 2018 as well.

This will be UCF's 10th season in BHNS...and only one time did UCF ever schedule 7 regular season home games in a season....as UCF has the same stadium debt structure payments for BHNS if UCF has only 6 home games per year or 7.

Good news is Danny White is a revenue guy (likes to bring it in and spend it), so I know Frost is working with him to help UCF get more home games in the future (i.e. more revenue and usually more wins for the head coach/program).

I hear what you are saying and you make valid points. I would like to add though that Boise isn't a real threat to join a P5 league anytime soon and UCF is. UCF advantages outweigh Boise, there's really no comparison.

I don't believe that failure is an option for Frost and company. I believe that we can get it done and it's just a matter now of making our current kids and future recruits believe that and give them the tools to execute on the field to get it done. Really hoping that Frost is our version of Tom Herman at Houston.

Go Knights!

We need to schedule as many P5 schools as we can. Preferably at home, but if we can't get that, then we can fill our schedule with a cupcake to make it to 6 home games. You are correct. Scott Frost has no fear and us fans need to follow his lead with that same mentality and support
There's no advantage for this team to play cupcakes. None. We don't have enough good teams on our schedule to purposely water it down even further.

I respect your opinion, but as a fan, season ticket holder and donor, I want my team taking on the challenge of playing P5 teams. You want 1 P5 game a year?? No way. I want 3
You don't need a bunch of meaningless W's against mediocre competition to build confidence. The players aren't stupid. They know that a close loss to a P5 school is better than a home win vs South Carolina State, etc. We can still get to 8-10 wins or more and a bowl game. Let's not take any back doors here.
Heck, if we go to P5 ourselves, then we will be playing nearly 100% of our games against them. Why not start now??
Whenever I try to recruit fans to watch games on TV or go to games. When I say
FIU or Furman, it's embarrassing (I know we lost), but when I say Michgan or even Maryland, eyes open wide. That's another way to get the stadium filled or people watching onTV

someone said none of our fans complain about our schedule, but on this post alone, i see more than five comments about how our schedule sucks!

Say what you want but if you go on the road and beat credible Power 5 programs, then you're a team to be reckon with. I dont care if its the 1940s, 80s or today.

Five home games in a row? Yikes. No thank you.
And then four away games in a row? Even worse.

I'd rather they would be every other week.

It seems that the same people who are now looking for more cupcake schedule are the same people who complained that winning in conference games was not enough; that we had to beat more P5 programs. You can't win them if you don't play them. Who wants a schedule like Marshal had? You want a balance of a couple of games to get your confidence and a couple of real challenges.
