Any idea where Gus goes from here with either position? Anyone out there that would be a trendy hire looking to move up or should move up?

Skies the limit...everybody who comes here has a great opportunity to use this job as a stepping stone. For those who have been heavily down on OC or DC, here you go...

I don't think stepping stones are what we should be looking for. I would like to see some young, new talented people who aren't necessarily friends of Gus and if that's not possible then we have a problem with Gus.

We need more Florida boys on our coaching staff …money talks but they will have more pause to make the move as quick to places like Arkansas

No trendy guy will accept OC under Gus.
We have some highly regarded analysts. One worked with Joe Brady. But Gus is going to hire bobby Bentley/burns/applin his trash golfing buddies.

Dc is going to be k mart which is good and probably one of the secondary coaches who should’ve been fired.

Where do I start? Mangas has proven nothing. He was a flop in his one stint as the guy at LSU. I like the guy. He knew Joe Brady. But Mangas didn't quarterback in college full time and has only coached quarterbacks a couple of times in his career.

Bobby Bentley is a former high school coach like Gus. Bentley has recruiting connections all over the South and is highly respected. He has never coached quarterbacks

Ryan Applin played quarterback successfully and has successful experience as a quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator. He would be a good hire. The golfing is merely coincidental: https://www.instagram.com/eastgeorgiagolfcarts/?hl=en

Kodi Burns is a phenomenal recruiter.

I will add one more name...

Tre Lamb would be an interesting out-of-the-box pick. He is currently the head coach at Gardner Webb. He proved to be an excellent offensive coordinator and evaluator of talent with stops at Mercer and Tennessee Tech. His name is synonymous with great coaching among the Georgia high school ranks: https://www.onlineathens.com/story/...honored-uga-footballs-kirby-smart/9823191002/

I think at this point it seems our line in '23 may include: Medley, Lee, Pauole, Rubelt and a portal addition to be acquired/announced at a later date. With the proper addition from the portal and time to gel, I think this can be a competitive line in the XII.

So we are only 4-5 good linemen short.....NO way this works in a P5 conference.

In the last 3 games we played against P5 teams, since December 21, we won 2. So I think the argument can be reasonably made that we have linemen to be competitive against P5 teams. I was merely saying competitive, not dominant. Note that I too am looking forward to us hopefully bringing in additional lineman in this recruitment and transfer cycle.

Once we get into the Big12 competition I hope this slows down but all the professionals from UCF who have gone into the work force play the same game of climbing the corporate ladder via promotions and job changes.

OC move was pretty obviously a sooner than later deal.
DC move to SEC is not too much of a surprise either.

I still don't think hires that look at UCF as a stepping stone is what we should be doing any longer. We have so much turn over in our coaching staff over the years. The continuity of staff at Cincinnati is what finally got them to where they are. It will be interesting to see what happens there now that Fickell is going to the Badgers in Wisconsin.

Latest Gus press conference he acknowledged the difficulty of calling plays and running a modern program so sounded like he was opening the door for a more expanded OC position with at least some play calling responsibility.
Lets hope. He is the CEO. Not a department head. Act like it.

How many up and coming OCs want to be told they have no input on play calling, particularly if they don't agree with Malzahn's philosophy?

He is actively acknowledging he hasn't been doing a good enough job. Now see if he actually gives it up, or just telling everyone its hard.

Pretty sure Gus is going to call the plays.
He gave it up at Auburn didnt like it. When he came here he said I will call the plays.

I think the debate is done

If you don't agree with his philosophy, you don't want the job. Play calling is a different issue.

I wonder If we haven’t made a decision on the OC position because it’s from someone in a program that’s in the playoff.

Wouldn’t this be a step down for him? Seems his next jump is HC

Was thinking more Dell McGee , who was a HS coach like Gus and will bring a running style which Gus likes. I’m also pretty sure they have a connection
Passing hame Coordinator is below OC. But he left Miami as their OC for this position. Thats why i doubt it. I think Gus needs someone who knows how to use the pass. He knows how to run already.

He probably realizes going into the Big12 he's got other crap to worry about. Makes sense. Plus we can get somebody to open the offense up and do what we do!

This is good news. Contrary to most on this forum, I like everything about Gus, even his offense most of the time. But sometimes it makes me want to throw something too. Would love an actual quality OC who calls plays.

I want to chime in on this take.

Read my lips.

Gus WILL NEVER give up play calling. He may orchestrate things in the media to appear that he has given up play calling, but Gus WILL NEVER give up play calling. Do not be duped. It is not going to happen.

This is what oddsmaker Danny Sheridan had this to say on Gus and play calling...

“He (Gus) said he was going to take over and be the offensive coordinator (after having allegedly given up play calling),” Sheridan said. “To be polite, poppycock, BS, he’s been the offensive coordinator for six years. ... "

Now that the "things will never change crowd" has said their take, the reality is UCF has changed with times and that has been part of our success. Gus will adapt as well or we will shyt can him after two-three years with that Big12 money.
