North Korea might halt nuclear pursuit

So Fatboy will give up his weapons in exchange for a lifetime supply of cheese?

The people of North Korea don't seem to mind being exploited by one of their own. Who are we to judge? If they were sick of Kim Jong Un they would've done what they French did to their king when they got fed up and chopped off his head. As long as the nuclear weapons are disarmed and he doesn't keep testing in the mountains, I could care less about what one North Korean does to another North Korean. Let the dictator remain in power over his people as long as our safety in our own countries isn't being threatened.

The US has been working the backchannels, especially via Tillerson, all while maintaining a public display of ...
  1. "We've been at this 24 years, we don't believe you any more" (entire administration)
  2. "We're open to drop nukes for guaranteed security for the regime" (entire administration)
  3. "We don't think the South Korean delegation will work, because nukes have to go" (entire administration)
  4. "We have more nukes, so don't f--- with us" (Trump)
It apparently is working. The whole US media is going to downplay it, and say the administration didn't do anything, but it's the results that matter. It's good cop (South Korea), bad cop (US), and North Korea cannot run to the Chinese any more.

Again, Tillerson got more sanctions on North Korea in 8 months than Hillary/Kerry did in 8 years. It's hurting them, badly. Not as much as it should, because China and Russia are cheating ... but still, it's working.

If this works for North Korea, then maybe it will work for Palestine as well. We'll see. It's still way, way too early to tell if the North Koreans are serious, but #2 and #3 are getting addressed, according to South Korea.

Again, we'll see.

Something is weird about this Trump meeting Un thing...I guess we'll see how it plays out...and if it ever happens.

people were freaking out last year that trumps very harsh talk against north korea would lead to a nuclear ww3 and we would all die. now im reading that officials in south korea actually think it was trumps harsh talk that lead directly to this meeting.

whether anything comes of this meeting or not, its still a big deal and a step in the right direction. no president has ever had a meeting with the leader of north korea.

Nothing will come of it. DPRK has always done this, negotiate for some money and sanctions relief and then go right back to the nukes when everything is delivered. I think Trump will be smarter about it than previous presidents and not give them anything until they turn over their nuclear program and allow for complete unimpeded access for random checks.

I wasn't replying to you. I'm just echoing the insanity from the MSLM.

So....
1) Don't watch it.
2) That's it, don't watch it.

I don't watch cable news but I typically go to NBCNews.com and I haven't seen anything along the lines of what you just wrote. I also think it's perfectly fair to question whether it's a good idea or not. It's a gamble considering know one knows what will happen.

I hardly see it being a gamble to talk to the guy.

He is used to a huff n puff n blow Obama down. Trump is no Obama.
people act like obama was significantly greater than trump on foreign policy because he was everyones friend. it seems like trump is actually getting more respect by flexing our muscle.

It’s to early to tell. I don’t like what Trump has done to our allies, but Obama made a lot of mistakes with stuff like Syria.

Kim Jong Un is under pressure within his own regime. It’s why so many family members end up dead. There is the chance that meeting with him only legitimizes him and North Korea on the world stage.

Personally I want him to meet with him. It’s not like we have anything to lose. The worst is they’ll just keep doing what they always have.

what dont you like about what hes done with our allies?

i think our ties with israel are stronger than they ahve ever been in the past. they might name one of their most popular train stations after him.

hes the first foreign leader to ever eat in the forbidden city. he literally made history.

Israel's leader is a douche - I can't stand him. He's also caught up in a scandal. Him and Trump are actually very similar leaders (scandal aside).

Why is he a douche? Because he has the gall to say Israel and Jews have the right to exist?

leaders come and go. longest and strongest ally in the middle east is still very important.

LMAO. You're too much. I was born and raised a Jew - have been to Israel - and most definitely believe they have the right to exist.

Doesn't mean they're angels when it comes to certain things. Once again - both sides can be wrong in certain situations.

I hate that he’s completely decimated the state department. He’s not filling ambassador positions and instead using his daughter and son in law as diplomats when they have no business representing the country in any form or capacity. Even established military hawks understand the value of the state department in helping to prevent conflict and its being completely destroyed.

yea thats pretty bad if its been that long. does he appoint and then congress needs to approve? could there be a bottle neck? i dont really know enough about it.

I just think it’s part of his whole shrink government campaign. And I’m not against removing unnecessary positions throughout all government. But diplomatic positions and those that support them have been hit especially hard. South Korea as of a month ago didn’t have an ambassador.

What allies? The feckless, hopeless Europeans?

Because Trump has absolutely started mending fences amongst key allies that currently sit in a region that matters- such as Israel, Saudi, UAE, and Egypt.

Obama left office having turned a knife in the back of our two largest Middle East allies, all to appease a terrorist regime in Tehran. He was awful.

Do you honestly not see how you're posts are as "bad" as anyone you make fun of?

Feckless, hopeless Europeans? Jesus.

i agree that those positions likely need to be filed, but there might be a larger meaning behind it. maybe its to send a message that we arent just an open cash register anymore. or maybe im giving him too much credit.

There was just a report published showing that Germany, the biggest power in Europe, has a military that is utterly in shambles. A total embarrassment.

They talk a big game about NATO yet so exactly nothing to meet the basic minimum requirements.

Europe is Europe. A continent whose glory days are gone. Sorry if this offends you; but hey- feel free to go backpack in hostels and tell your friends how “out there” you are!

Lol. No- that’s my point. I travel and see all of these places and what’s actually going on there. I just spent 3 weeks in the Middle East. America’s idea of what actually goes on there is so flawed and idiotic because virtually no one here has been there.

Same for Europe. I’ve been there and have friends all over the continent- and THEY agree that they are part of a dying, increasingly irrelevant society that is looking less European every year. Do you think it’s just coincidence that populist parties are growing in influence there? Do you know that Italy just put anti-EU populists into power?

The next 100 years will be a power struggle between the US and China. The Middle East will either grow into the next up and coming sphere of power, or it will further spiral into chaos. Asia will become the rival economic zone to challenge the US- not the EU.

Europe will putter along and NATO will become further irrelevant as EU countries spend less and less on defense when their social welfare programs further devour their budgets and debt.

I don’t completely disagree with you. Asia, China in particular, is the greatest geopolitical rival to the US in the coming century. But as the world changes and technology increases, I see oil demand decreasing which will hurt the Middle East economies. And as the climate changes, the water in those arid climates could very well dry up. You add in the religious theocracy aspect to all this and I see nothing but more chaos for the Middle East and Africa.

The world is always in chaos and probably always will be. Super powers come and go.

Remember we’ve only been around for a fraction of the time the rest of the world has and we’ve only been the worlds greatest power for a fraction of that.

The Middle East powers know this, and are trying to do something about it.

I spent a week in Riyadh- you used to see the religious police everywhere; I didn’t see them once in my entire time. Women are about to start driving. Saudi Aramco is floating part of their shares on the public market. They’ve got a young Crown Prince who will soon be King at just 33 years old.

Maybe it’s too little too late but they’re trying to modernize and find an economy beyond oil. The UAE has done this fairly well.

The problem is that Mohammed bin Salman and his youthful reformers will run smack dab into the Wahabi tribes and religious zealots. It’s probably 50/50 as to whether Saudi flourishes as a modernized society, or spirals into a quasi-civil war.

Times have changed. The only thing that can destroy the US is the US. We're not like the Romans, USSR (at least not yet), or England. We can't be invaded by land, it would be next to impossible to attack us by air or sea but we're getting too close to a socialist country that will devour itself. Our massive entitlements and debt is what will kill us, not an outsider.

I think that's a silly and short-sided way to look at things. I'm sure many of the superpowers of the past thought the exact same thing. There's many things that can and likely will eventually weaken us both internally and externally. Whatever that may be might not have even been created yet. We've only been THE global superpower since WW2 really.

Looking at $20T in debt killing the country is not short sighted. It's reality. That will break down the country before influence from any foreign nation will.
