OL future? Recruiting focus?

This is the one area that I’m VERY concerned about.

Is this getting the attention and focus that it needs or is my panic overblown?
I’m getting close to panic mode. The current OL starters haven’t done well at all and this position group needs to be a focus to run the type of offense Gus runs…maybe worked for the Heupel drop back bombs away. He did not recruit the lines well at all.

Over the past 6-7 years, this is the position we have had the most whiffs on.....so many guys we were excited about turned into nothing. Here is a list of such players from 2016-2021:

Aaron Dowdell 5.8 4 star
Lamarius Benson 5.6 3 star
James (not Ed) Collins 5.5 3 star
Adrian Medley 5.7 3 star
Allan Adams 5.5 3 star
Michael Loftin 5.6 3 star
Patrick Barnett 5.5 3 star
Leander Wiegand (Germany)
Ethan Mort 5.6 3 star

"Best OL ever." Probably the worst quote from the pre-season. That or the team is full of dogs. Hopefully getting better.

There is a chance we will lose 4-5 starters. We will be shopping at The Portal. Hope we are more discerning.

Losing 4-5 starters and some backups.

Equally concerning is I am not certain whether more than two offensive linemen on the current roster are talented enough to lock down starting positions in 2023.

UCF should hit the portal AND juco ranks.

Offered an OL from Tyler Texas Juco the other day.

Dangling starting spots for a Big12 team should help lure premium transfer help hopefully. Would love to see some high school recruits developing, though. May Rubelt is ready to take that step?

And Gus only signed one OL in his first HS recruiting class. It seems like not enough emphasis is being placed on a position group that is by far the weakest and thinnest.

Swaboda will likely be replaced with another 6th year transfer as will SJ. Hopefully they pan out better
Although it is likely we bring in a 6th year guard for depth, I think the likely/hopeful replacement for SJ is Adrian Medley if he successfully rehabs from his injury by next spring. He played well last year at guard for 1-2 games, when Cole Schneider moved over to center during Matt Lee's injury.
