OT: Butch Davis new FIU Head Coach

They need a coach and he needs work. Also, he has south Florida ties as he was successful with Miami years ago

very good get for them. Could do for them what the GOL get did for us.

Cool! So they will go 0-11, 4-8, 4-8, 5-7, and 0-12 over the next few years? Will they get hit with NCAA sanctions as well? Maybe they will get hit with multiple lawsuits. I guess we can expect FAU to beat them 64-12 next year.

I'm sure that's exactly what they want...someone to do for them what GOL did for us!

Well could you imagine if FIU won a bcs (access) game? Right now their program support is worse than a high school and facilities to match a high school.

You mean a BCS bowl where all you had to do was win your conference because you were in a BCS conference for all of 1 year? Dude...it's not all that impressive to win a crappy conference. GOL only had to be better than 10 other teams to get into a BCS bowl in 2013. Now you have to be better than like 50 teams. What WMU is about to do is way more impressive than anything grandpa did.

The first blemish on Danny White's record will be allowing this statue thing and inviting GOL to the game Saturday. The crowd is NOT going to react well. It's funny how there is no publicity. It's almost like they want to keep it on the D/L. Why would you do that if this is some major crowning achievement wanted by all?

They needed some kind of spark that program was struggling. First game will be against the Knights Sept 2 at UCF!

I have a feeling the statue will get the same embrace as the conflict trophy.

We would have been in a bcs game regardless. We were the highest ranked team even if you counted us as a g5.

Wait... GOL is getting honored at half time?

Interesting. FIU has potential.
No it doesn't. It's a total commuter school, majority lower-income Latino, and small stadium. Almost its entire athletic budget is funded by student fees (72%) -- highest in the nation! Great area for recruits, but most go up north or to one of the established state programs.

Correct. Sure all we had to do was win our conference, but with Fresno State and Northern Illinois losing late in the season we had the highest the BCS rating outside the ACC, Big 12, Big 10, SEC and Pac 12.

He could do a good job if they start investing in Athletics but the culture issues are a much bigger hurdle to growth

Where are all the 8-12 win seasons??? Sanctions?? That was GOL??? 64-12 the next year??? Your warped spin, obsession and lack of facts is idiotic at best.

Its still 5 losing seasons and 7 winning seasons. Someone on this board mentioned how patient Virginia Tech was with Frank Beamer. The first five years weren't remarkable, then afterwards he had 24 straight winning seasons before retiring. Even when he was ready to retire, he still finished 7-6 with a bowl win.
That was the same storyline that was suppose to apply to GOL. Sure the first five years consisted of a bowl games, but the best was yet to come. Long story short, 0-12 still hurts the fans. The rhetoric maybe strong but the concern is there. The statue at least should've been delayed until GOLs last year as an adviser. /digression into GOL

Ron Turner was supposed to do the same GOL did for UCF apparently. He failed. FIU alumni are probably watching 30 for 30 and salivating how they'll do the same for their program like he did for Miami.

I still think FIU would take GOL accomplishments in a heartbeat.

That is the truth. They just lose all the time. GOL would just lose half the time and mix in a few conference championships. The bar is set pretty low at FIU. The few hundred fans left are probably just family and friends.

Thats the reason for the Ron Turner hiring. They wanted discipline and organization. Just like GOL...
Unfortunately his results didn't match up with GOLs.

Why Not Us?

MIAMI (AP) — Butch Davis kept the message simple when he met with his new FIU football team for the first time Tuesday.

He rattled off a list of schools who aren't in major conferences and still found a way to get into major bowls in recent years, the likes of Boise State and Northern Illinois and Central Florida and Houston.

"If they can get into Jan. 1 bowl games, why not us?" Davis said. "Why not us?"

However, none of which prevents a quality coach from attracting 50-80 high quality athletes to an environment not previously known for athletic achievement. See Univ. of Miami circa 1980, or UCF circa 2000.

I think Davis is a good pick up. He has recruited in South Florida before lets see how well he recruits for FIU. It's not Miami. When FIU was good they had that TY Hilton dude. He attended Miami Springs High School. There is a lot of hidden talent in Florida. :sunglasses:

Or maybe we could go 8-5, 10-4, 8-5, 11-3, 10-4, 12-1, and 9-4, winning 3.5 Conference titles and winning a BCS Bowl game. With your selective memory, do you remember that our sanctions actually came about because of DJ, Tribble, and coach Kelly...and not GOL. WMU's season is more impressive than anything we've done? That's funny. I hadn't really had a good laugh yet today. So in 2013, if were a G5 conference where would UCF have fallen out....oh, I know. We would have been the top G5 team, and we went 2-1 playing against teams that finished the season in the top 15....not at the beginning....the end. So which win for you puts WMU over-the-top? 5-5 Northwestern or maybe 3-7 Illinois?
If you don't want to deal with it hang out underneath the stands during halftime. I think the halftime shows are pitiful so I don't sit there and watch. We go hang out and bullsh_t. It's just that easy. Frankly I could care less because if you haven't noticed, we have a new staff and a team that honestly has been good enough to play for our conference title and we are nowhere near our cieling. What we really need is a nice place to view our hardware. That hardware is about the programs success, and no one person.

This is bad for UCF and USF... Davis probably won't steal too many 4&5 stars from the big schools but he will likely compete with us for the high 3 stars and hidden gems.

You are attempting to reason with someone who has tunnel vision and a GOL obsession.

Sure. But winning doesn't matter. It doesn't generate much more attendance and certainly no more revenue. It's a kobayashi-maru no-win scenario.

good point c-mont....but...that Tostitos bowl #10 ranking might be worth all of the GOL cursing I did. It's a close one! :)

Despite all the luck we had that year -- few major injuries, not having to play Cincy, winning the appeal to even be allowed to play in a bowl, and two bye weeks coming at perfect times -- GOL did a near-perfect job of coaching that year. Also, the only coach to get us to bowls (and winning some), all but one of our victories over P-5 teams, giving us real the big-name coaching street cred among the sports establishment (and representing us well among them), and believing in and developing UCF's only legit NFL running backs (Smith and Murray became the complete packages because of GOL).

There's more bowls these days than there were when Kruz was around. Kruz got us eligible all but two years, but because we were independent the best we got was a provisional offer.
I'm happy for 2013 and the conference titles but you can argue GOL underachieved considering the budget he was given. I know here comes the personal attacks, but you mention his victories over P5 schools - but that couldve been better considering that was one of the main reasons they brought him, etc. As one of the top programs of the conference, we shouldn't be losing to less than .500 Missouri in 2012. That said he took us as far as he could. I'm expecting consistent P5 wins with Scott Frost (not all btw but a .500 record at least) and improved brand name value. Then we can get that long awaited canopy constructed on top of the stadium.***(sorta serious though).

That's where respectability came in: going from too dangerous to schedule (Kruzcek's teams) to "the ol' ball coach" GOL who P-5 ADs were able to justify agreeing to home-and-away series. The new, on-campus stadium gave us legitimacy, too. Still, UCF always performed better in big games on the road and choked at home: Louisville, NCState, the bowl wins, Kruczek's win at Bama (and his close calls). The blowouts at the Citrus bowl against Purdue and VaTech (who didn't have to play their star and only had to attempt one pass), Texas, Mizzou, Maryland, etc. still hurt.

Come on you don't really expect him to understand facts and reason do you? By now you should know that Cmont is obsessed with all things negative at UCF, especially GOL. Normally I might be a little disturbed at at GOL statue at this point, because we are too early in the Frost era, but just the fact that it drives the anti-GOL people crazy is making it more and more evident that I am going to like having it.

I don't think so. You might be able to attract sub-standard student talent, much like Miami did in the 80s and USF did in the the early 00s. UCF has a pretty high standard as far as the student athlete goes. Personally I think this adds to the championships, bowl wins, top 25 finishes, NFL draft picks and other major accomplishments UCF has had over the years. I don't know if FIU can get attract the same caliber of student as UCF can. You really want both student AND athlete.

I definitely can't disagree here. And I will give credit where it is due...the Fiesta Bowl game is truly one where I felt GOL coached the perfect game. That being said...I think SF can get us there as well without the losing seasons in between.
