From historical to fiction, some good Irish movies of all types can help you get in the mood for the upcoming trip to Ireland.

Some fun and usually fictional ones::

The Commitments
Waking Ned Devine
In America (Irish Family comes to America)
The General
My Left Foot (Daniel Day Lewis wins an Oscar for his performance)
Crying Game (yes, THAT Crying Game), most remember one infamous scene from that movie but the backdrop was the Troubles.

Historical, some more than others (from Irish War of Independence & Revolution/Irish Civil War/Uprising/IRA/Troubles, etc..)

Michael Collins (starring Liam Neesen about one of the most famous Irish Revolutionist)

In the Name of the Father (starring Daniel Day Lewis, 7 Academy Award nominations. Side note: One of Robert F. Kennedy's daughters eventually one of the supposed IRA bombers, Paul Hill after he got out of jail))

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War during the late 1910's-early 1920's, great flick)

Harry's Game (3 part UK mini-series dealing with IRA Assasinations and the Britsh hunt for the killers. Also the theme song was one of the first "new age hits" of that era by the Irish group Clannad, which helped propel the popularity of Irish music in the 80's and 90's)

The Quiet Man (starring John Wayne)

The Boxer (Daniel Day Lewis again, tries to bring kids from both sides of the conflict while trying to build/open a gym for them)

Bloody Sunday (Surrounding the events that build up to the infamous attack by British Paratroopers on demonstrators on that Sunday in 1972. U2 who obviously famous song Sunday Bloody Sunday, has a live version of that song at the end of the film)

Hunger (story about IRA Prisoners and their experiences in British Prisons)

The Devil's Own (starring Harrison Ford & Brad Pitt, set in/around the Troubles/IRA during support from those in the USA)

Patriot Games (Tom Clancy's novel starring Harrison Ford, dealing with IRA Bombing attacks)

Ryan's Daughter (dealing with IRA arms shipments from Europe and the consequences that followed)

Rebel Heart (UK mini-series about the Easter Uprising & Irish Civil War)
