Liberty University administrators made an announcement about a required tradition at each football game.
The announment went on to instruct the students and season ticket holders to form a triangle with the person to their front and to their left. The crowd must take turns persistently yelling at one minute intervals so that nobody loses their voice (a la Terry Rooney). Everyone must hit the same note with their voice (with one side of the stadium producing a tone that is 90 degrees out of phase with the other side's tone), that way the soundwaves will sum constructively and the magitude of the wave will be equivalent to that of 45k+ yelling out of tune.
Once the Liberty student body and ticketholders perfect this, they must then practice doing all different crazy patterns with their voice around the stadium, forming a "vocal wave" to distract the opposing offense. Students and season ticket holders not participating in this new tradition will be fined $10 each, as this is seen as a way to generate national interest in the football program (which is competing for the first year in the FCS.)
A bit of irony in this story: Liberty University supporters that fought to cut high school music programs in Lynchberg County (due to budget cuts) are now looking to refund these programs, because the ability to carry a tune at the same note is key to generating enough perpetual noise to bring attention to the program. They now consider the ROI in high school music programs to be positive based on the expected boost to the Lynchberg economy when the football program becomes more prominent.
Another point of interest, the sounds from the stadium will produce a sound not unlike that heard in a church choir for over two straight hours. Imagine hearing that and not knowing what's going on.
