I don't care for the jerseys, but I would love to see a pegasus helmet, even if only a one off.

EDIT: If memory serves, we actually DID have a Pegasus helmet back in 81 and 82. I'll have to do some digging to see if I can scrounge up any game pics or if my mind is foggy.

I like the idea of including the pegasus more prominently but don't think its a good idea brand wise. We'd have to drop the space unis and citronaut in order to not obfuscate our brand too much.

I personally do not believe there is any obfuscation.

Concepts in marketing are far different now than they were even 10 years ago. I had to learn this with starting a business as I was stuck in the "Single logo guys! Keep it simple!" mentality. Attention spans are shorter. Brands are more than just a logo and an alternate, they now encapsulate theme. In College football, people love throwback, alternates, cartoons, you name it. What UCF is doing currently is in congruence with those trends. Opinion only based on what I've observed. UCF is known now for having variations in uniform...versus ...10 years ago...the Space uniform is an annual head-turner in ALL of FBS (Many articles on it).

Basically, if the next generations were fish, one has to cast many lines with different types of bait.

UCF is going to the Big 12, I have difficulty finding where variance in uniform has affected marketing image with fans or media, or where it affects any upward trajectory.

Cool, thanks for sharing your experience. I don't know much about the stuff so this was just my opinion. To me it seems like UCF is in a position where it needs to keep solidifying the brand in people's mind.

I like Oregons model of having lots of combinations but they mostly use the same logo and pattern. Even our script, knight head, and UCF-Florida logos are all basically the same branding of "UCF Knights". That said I'm open to anything to increase our exposure and favorability among CFB and recruits.

I'd like a more flushed out uniform for our military appreciation game. Use our colors to create a subdued, star-spangled jersey. I'm picturing anthracite jerseys with white stars across the shoulders/traps and military-stencil styled numbers and lettering for names.

I love the look of the oversized Pegasus, Knightman. Well done. The black version is badass as well.

But I do think Pegasus should be last in the line in our sports apparel. 1) Knight 2) Space/Citronaut theme 3) Pegasus. Pegasus is more on the academic side. 3 distinct logos/mascots is already too much as it is brand wise.

I know UCF people think UCF is is known everywhere in the US but not in the slightest. Talk to anyone outside the southeast and they won't have a clue who we are. I still get frustrated when I talk college ball with some of these people in the northeast. Had a guy who never heard of us but was a huge Bills fan and I said "ohh so you like Gabe Davis, right?" And he was like "Of course!" and I said "Yup he's a UCF guy" now that guy know who UCF is and that story is similar for everyone of our big guys in the NFL. We ain't no Ohio St. or Bama. Branding is a real thing and we are still very young in the scene.

Anyone who watched college football and basketball has at least heard of us. I don’t think your 1 guy in Buffalo is proof.

Thank you Sir Cometh! I am doing more. I found a way to create almost endless concepts. It's fun...good time killer.

To all:
Many don't know that Pegasus was the original athletic logo. Citronaut was a concept that never used until last 10 years.

People first learn of a name first, not logo.

I believe in hard, observable results, which I learned about at UCF:

Branding is just fine, and even with variance in logo and color(which many successful programs are doing now, even older programs), it has NOT hurt UCF in any measure. UCF is about to have best recruiting class ever...and is moving to Big 12 over many schools with simpler themes and longer time with classic branding. Not arguing variance as a reason, just that it hasn't hurt and it appears to be appreciated with new athletes.

Fact remains: marketing now is for the next generations and they prefer variety (just look at pop trends, gaming and movies... Clothing has a wide variance in color and pattern, similar to marketing trends in the 80s, it's just the way it is again).

Keeping within theme is more important. Not so much simplicity.

Many brands have stayed the same, and UCF leapfrogged those brands. Again, Not saying branding is the cause, just that there is no measurable effect.

As a funny twist, I usually say "Central Florida" to people outside of the region and they immediately know what I am talking about. Avoiding "Central Florida" after being called that literally for 4+ decades and having it on athletic uniforms was, in my opinion, an arbitrary, pretentious decision and unfortunate vestigial remnant of the Tribble administration.

I find a lot of Northern and Midwestern NFL fans to be largely clueless of college football outside of them knowing the Notre Dames and Bamas.

(off soapbox).

This is the Florida/Orlando way of thinking. NO ONE is a bigger advocate of UCF than me and I am telling you I'm lucky if 10-15% of the "sports" people I talked to have ever heard of UCF. You assume just because someone watches college football or basketball they follow all the conferences or teams. No. They follow the mainstream guys like Bama, Duke, Gaytors, or whatever the big team is where they're from. Mainstream college audiences don't follow G5 teams, hell they don't even know of bottom feeders of the SEC like Arkansas.

And yeah I think the last 5-10yrs has helped us a lot but it's still a slow process. I've gotten into arguments trying to prove to people we're a better team than Miami but because they are familiar with the Miami name from the 70s and 80s, they don't wanna hear it. Not until I pull up the records of our past 10 years and see our ranked season finishes and NY6 bowl wins vs Miami's diddley squat record they do they listen and learn, but this is a battle every few weeks with new people. I do think B12 will help substantially but finishing ranked is big too.

I’m telling you , you’re wrong. If they watch Sportscenter they’ve heard of us. If they watch NY6 games they’ve heard of us. If they watch Duke Basketball in tourney, they’ve heard of us. If they don’t do any of that they aren’t sports fans. I don’t count a Bills fan, who doesn’t pay attention to draft, a sports fan. He’s a Bills fan on Sundays only. Probably doesn’t even watch every game. I’ve heard of 99.9% of all FBS teams.

I'm telling you, you must not get out of Florida often.

And my beef isn't with the "hardcore" guys, it is with the casual guys that can't name you 5 teams outside of the state/teams they follow, and dismiss teams like UCF because they've never heard of them. Those people watch Sportscenter too- that certainly doesn't qualify someone being hardcore or not. And you overestimate how involved people care about things YOU care about. I would consider myself a sports fan, but couldn't name you more than 6 or 7 MLB teams because I hate baseball and never follow it.

I've spent a good amount of time outside of Florida the past few years and I've met a lot of people who know UCF. They know who our head coaches are, support our NC, and generally like us. I'm sure some super casual fans have never heard of us but those are the same people that don't know the difference between G5 and D2- they just don't know anything. I do think the northeast is a very self-centered region where CFB is much less popular than the southeast and midwest so that probably has something to do with it.

I’m on Social Media quite a bit. People from all over country are on there. They’ve heard of UCF. I am from Cleveland and lived in S Carolina for a year. I’m not coming from someone born and raised in Orlando and never been anywhere else. You have to not be a real sports fan if you’ve never heard of any FBS schools or not name 20 MLB teams. Even if you don’t watch baseball, if you travel as much as you say, you’d see signs for baseball teams and people in those cities would be talking about the game.

You sound really naïve. And learn to read, I never said "I travel so much" 🙄 if you want to put words in my mouth, go ahead, chief, it's still a free country.

I guess we have 2 different definitions of sports fans and knowledge. Do you only come here and talk to 1 guy in Buffalo? The one guy I know that’s from Buffalo actually is a fan of team and knows UCF. He hated Troupe. Meh on Aiken and likes Davis. You probably have to look the other 2 up but they played at UCF and in Buffalo. You and your friend can just think UCF is only know in the State of Florida if you want. But that’s naive and ignorant.

If the unis pump the kids up, and better kids sign with UCF, and UCF performs better, resulting in more air time on major networks, more national exposure, than that's a win...

Have 14 logos/designs for all I care, one for each game thru the Natty... The announcers will say "UCF", and the stack logo will be on the tv graphic next to our score throughout the game. No one gets confused by what's on a team's helmet, most don't even pay attention.

WTF?

If you can't name 5 teams outside your own state then no way is that person a sports fan...let alone a casual sports fan.

If one doesn't know UCF played in 3 BCS/NYD6 Bowl games in 6 years...and had a 25 game winning streak AND was a key talking point on EVERY National.College football show for almost 2 years...then that person or dog is not a college football fan.

...those same people (or dogs) with absolutely no interest / awareness of sports or traditions are the same moral crusaders seeking to change team names like the Cleveland Indians. Journalosers seeking relevance.
