Pitt Game Hotel Information

I lived in Pittsburgh for years. If you stay downtown or south of the city you can ride the train to the stadium. North or West of the city is fine too you’ll just have to drive.

The areas to avoid include the Hill District and Wilkinsburg.

If anyone starts finding specific places, I can tell you about the areas.

Pittsburgh is a great food town and each neighborhood has their specialties.

Other things to do while you’re there. Visit the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt’s campus. It’s breathtaking. And Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water is only a 90 minute drive outside the city. I highly recommend it. There’s nothing else like it.

Awesome. Thanks! I’m about 2 miles from downtown. Plan on eating, drinking and touring on foot. I often like to explore new cities and walk to and from the game on foot for the full experience. Especially after a win.
I’ve heard about a hill and a famous burger joint

I’ll look into the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water.

Primantis is a staple for food. The hill is Mt Washington. Take the incline up. You’re only an hour or 2 from Cleveland as well if you want to go to Rock and Roll HOF or Football HOF in Canton.

Ok thanks! Yes, Mt Washington. How far is that? I’ve never thought Pittsburgh had high elevations.

Like was said, Primanti’s is the famous sandwich shop. Go to the one in the Strip District for the historic experience. For a great breakfast you can’t beat Pamela’s or DeLuca’s, both are quite famous.

Pittsburgh is in a valley of mountainous areas just east of West Virginia and to the east are the Allegheny mountains. Mount Washington is on the south side of the city. It’s a great place to walk around at night and take it a picture perfect city skyline.

And right next to Heinz Field, where Pitt plays, is a casino. I fully expect a ton of UCF fans to head over there after the game for some celebratory libations and gambling.

Here is the incline. Also when coming from the airport which is west of Pittsburgh in Moon Township area, pay close attention when going in tunnel through hillside. All of the sudden you’ll see the City after a lot of nothing. It’s pretty cool.

This. It’s the Fort Pitt Tunnel. The city just appears on the other side. It’s a very cool entrance.

Damn! Amazing view! I’ll have to go there. Pittsburgh actually sounds like a really cool city. Very picturesque. I’m glad that I’m going now. I’ve been to a lot of places, but never there

Great information. Any suggestions on which hotel to stay? I thinking downtown. What do you think?

If you can, stay downtown or on the north shore. Downtown will be a great central spot for getting around. The stadium is on the North Shore. Which is west of downtown on the other side of the Ohio River. It’s a nice area too and there will be hotels around there as well because Heinz Field and PNC Park are located right next to each other.

To get between downtown and the north shore you can take the Metro which is the subway. Because it’s in the central business district, it’s free in these areas. Uber, busses, or walking to the stadium from downtown are all options. In might be a bit of walk (a mile or two) but it’s a nice walk and you get to cross the Roberto Clemente bridge which is pretty cool.

Its a very cool city. I miss living there, despite the winters. Its got a very storied past with all the steel production and everything. But what was once dust and grime has been changed to a robotics and tech hub for the east coast. Its come a long way from when the rivers caught on fire lol. That's not to say that all the steel mills are gone. There are still several still producing, there just further down the rivers outside the city now. Its just the city put a lot of time and effort into the cleanup and reinvigorating itself.

It's the opposite of what happened to Detroit.

A few other things to things to see:
Unfortunately the Pirates are away that weekend.

Pitt's campus is in Oakland (East of Downtown) and the Cathedral of Learning is like walking into a castle:

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Art Museum, and Phipps Conservatory:

(All of these are close to each other)

The Andy Warhol Museum:

Falling Water (About 90 minutes outside the city)

Flight 93 Memorial (Outside of the city as well)

All correct but the water that caught fire was Lake Erie in Cleveland. Not the 3 Rivers that run through Pittsburgh.

A lot of my first generation family members to US became Coal Miners. My Grandma was an elevator operator in the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce Building. I’ve only been back to the Burgh twice in last 15 years though.

Pittsburgh is a cool town, I went to see a customer there last year. Fuel and Fuddle was a fun place right down from Pitt to grab a brick oven pizza. Cool college atmosphere, cheap food, and great beer specials.

That’s a Pitt student hangout. Good food.

Strip district is cool and a lot of beer and food options (and steelers gear). Also for b-fast Deluca's Café on the strip is awesome worth the wait.

Does the train go to the airport in a reasonable amount of time or is it better to Uber if doing everything else downtown/on foot

Should I stay at the Wyndham Grand Pitt Downtown on the South side just across the bridge 0.8 miles from Heinz Field or should I stay at the Residence Inn Marriot on the North side 0.6 miles due East of Heinz Field?

Both are $170 per night. The Marriot is closer to the stadium 0.4 miles vs. 0.8 miles, but both are plenty close to walk.

The Wyndham appears to be located in the bigger downtown area on the south side of river.

What do you guys do for game day tailgating when you are at away games where you fly and can’t drive with all your tailgate stuff?

I’m a season ticket holder, but amazingly I’ve never been to a UCF away game.

Uber to airport for sure. There are no trains that run by the airport since it’s Far East of the city. I live 5 miles south of downtown.

Wyndham is basically in point state park which is where the rivers meet. I would stay there. Meat and Potato's which is a block away has solid food and drinks.

You can walk the Roberto Clemente bridge to go over to the North Shore past PNC park. There are restaurants over there too.

Yep, staying south of the city and catching the light rail into town is what I used to do when I worked there.

Indeed. I enjoyed learning several over the months.

The overlook of the river meetings from the west side is pretty cool. Here's a shot from '07 I made with a 6MP camera and a manual lens.

Primanti Bros is overrated garbage. I'm sure there are better options for food there.
