He's pulling our troops out of Afghanistan by September, or at least that's the plan. I hope this doesn't just mean we are moving troops from one country to another, but regardless anything makes more sense than keeping our troops in a country that doesn't really matter to us anymore.

We invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 for what? 20 years later, what good did it do?

Just imagine how our country would look right now if the trillions we borrowed from China to fund our ME adventures had been spent on improving our infrastructure.

Killing Bin Laden should have been a covert, special forces assignment from the start.

The Afghanistan attack -- followed by our Iraq invasion -- were two of the stupidest decisions our country has made in my lifetime.

We will just have "advisors" there instead IF they actually pull everyone out. Seriously doubt they actually do it though.

The main reason to invade Afghanistan, like it or not, was to eliminate it as a terrorist staging location. The only problem is that when we leave it will simply revert back

Not necessarily. The main reason we invaded Afghanistan was to eliminate it as a terrorist staging site. This has been effective but only for as long as we were there. It will resume being a terrorist staging site as soon as we leave. It has and always will be a shithole. We thought we could change it like we always think we can.

Pretty sure the government had to fly all of Bin Laden’s relatives out of the country before they could officially place the blame on him. Then they had to deflect the wrath of the US to Iraq and Afghanistan instead of the actual terrorists. Those things take time. The neocons had been planning to get into Afghanistan since the late 90’s. They were patient.

I repeat, what good did the $2 trillion we borrowed from China for our Middle East endeavors do for us in the long run?

Huh? When did we loan 3 trillion to China?
Lol. We've been loaning money to China for years. The whole narrative of them holding a bunch of our debt is only half of the story. We are basically at a net zero with what they owe us vs what we owe them.

How do you quantify the potential number of lives saved from terrorist activity that would have originated out of Afghanistan?

The notion that you have to invade a poor nation like Afghanistan with a land army is your grandpa’s idea of stopping the bad guys. It’s expensive on the front end and the back end and doesn‘t accomplish the job.

Just a reminder, we eventually stopped Bin Laden with a special ops team, not an invading army.

There's a difference between going after one dude in one spot versus going after the Taliban who were in control of the country and spread out everywhere.

I'm not sure what the right answer is. I don't want us to be there indefinitely but conversely, I don't want it to be a terrorist staging site either. I think it's a very tough decision with no great answer.

Btw, we did special ops in Afghanistan on high value targets quite frequently so we actually had both.

I suspect that when all is said and done, we'll keep a smallish force on the ground and continue to have both.
