After reading all the during and post-game reaction, I can feel everyone's pain/frustration as well as ppl expressing hope. There are some posters looking at the positives today of the run game, run D, sacks, etc; Then there are the people saying how we got annihilated, the special teams were awful, QB play bad, etc.
All legitimate points.
But I think it all the emotions from our fan base comes down to expectations. It all started with 2010- the first time we tasted some real success- a 10 win season, and a bowl win over a major program (UGA). Then after one poor season, we saw 3 straight extremely successful seasons full of tons of program firsts- Beating top 10 ranked teams, being ranked in the top 10, a 12-win season, back-to-back conference titles. Then the crowning achievement of winning the Fiesta Bowl- the moment that legitimized the UCF Football Program. For the first time, we didn't feel like the little guy- you could mention that your a fan of the UCF program to someone from outside of Orlando with pride and know that you could say "UCF" without having to say the school in Orlando - we were legitimately known for a football accomplishment.
So when, the 2015 season happened, our feel good around the program got rippe away. We took a step back as a program and that hurt. Just when we finally felt we were in big boy territory, on the verge of being a consistent player in big boy action (relatively speaking- not referring to national championships, but major bowls), we go back to how we felt prior to this era. The 2012-2014 era- we got used to that winning. So now that its gone you can see our fans having all this dissent and going back and forth on where we are as a program.
I feel that its all about expectations. We can realize we took a step back, but that doesnt take away from our past accomplishments and legitimacy. We are temporary irrelevant, but I think the growth of this program shows now that we actually have these expectations and expect to be relevant.
But, the difference between last year's season compared to other bad seasons is we will be back and we will be relevant again. We have a talented young coach, a dedicated new AD and our making so many positive changes with the program across the board.
Regardless if we only win 4-5 games this year, it won't stop our return to relevancy. The recruits will come and we will improve.
Just keep perspective before you bash the talent or the play in a game against the No. 5 team in the country. Today is not the measuring stick for the season, but especially for the future. When you are looking at today's loss and see how far away we looked from Power 5 football, also think about how recently we were playing with the big boys (2013) and know the dedication is their from the program to get back to that. Trust the process and vision- I think the long term is the most promising it has ever been, where we can feel that relevancy again but on a consistent basis this time. It jus might take a year or two. Charge On.
