Looks like its probably going to be something that gets a serious look this year. So what would be fair?

I suggest we do a 1-time payment of 50,000 dollars to every African American that has descendants dating back to before 1865. With that payment, all future claims for government assistance in the form of welfare, food stamps, and the like are forfeited. The cost would be something like 2.5 trillion, but for the taxpayer it would be a 10 year ROI. We could just put an end to this altogether.

Yes, but my point is you would be taking away services from them, that some might need at some point in the future, you can never predict how life goes. That doesnt seem like great to me.

Yes, and no. Some of the argument also has some precedence in the form of Native American Nation agreements with the US, but they are called out as nations in the US Constitution, as well as have pre-existing agreements with the US (including many breaches of contract).

African-Americans don't so much have agreements and recognition. It's always been a big, side interest of mine, being my family is on the Dawes Act rolls for the Cherokee Nation (I'm 1/8th by heredity), but have never applied for citizenship, much less granted such, so I am not Cherokee.

It didn't but legal descrimination was made illegal at that point. You can't give reparations for discrimination by private companies in the past, but you can by government and we've done it before (Japanese internment).

My thoughts? I'm thinking that one of the board's most conservative posters is bringing up a discussion thread on one of the Democrats' most liberal proposals for a reason.

This is a VERY complicated issue and the very notion that it can be 'solved' with some kind of cash giveaway is beyond stupid. It would be akin to giving Flint residents a month's worth of free bottled water after 150 years of giving them bad drinking water. The answer is to permanently fix the city's water system.

The only reason I'm ok with it is because all monetary and fiscal responsibility is out the window now. Give them some money if that's what they want. It won't affect me at all. I just hope they do it before the crash, and yes I'm being honest about that.

You'll know when I do. For now, it doesn't really matter what they do, the only place we see inflation is in capital assets and crypto currencies. Hell, bitcoin has a larger market share now than Apple. Even dollars are just imaginary money because it isnt affecting MV no matter how much viagra they pump into the system.

I honestly think we could do UBI right now and it wouldn't make a difference. By the time it actually matters, they're just going to reset everything and it will all go away.

You are aware that the MAJORITY of people on welfare or receiving gov't assistance are White right? lol Not to mention a MAJORITY of Black people are NOT receiving gov't assistance either moron. Of course the majority on welfare are white, that stands to reason. We aren't talking about giving them reparations though. It just seems logical that if you're going to cut a check to someone that there should be some give and take to it.

Eventually it would. It has nothing to do with what percent are receiving benefits compared to another demographic because there is only one demographic asking for reparations. They aren't equal quantities at this point.

I'd have to go back and look. That isn't really the point though because the only demographic that is asking for reparations are African Americans. The large majority of them aren't on public assistance, but to that end you could say that reparations aren't necessary because slavery should be affecting all of them equally.

I'm suggesting that if one demographic feels like they are at a financial disadvantage due to slavery, give that entire demographic the reparations they are asking for to get them on equal footing. But for that to be practical, there has to be some return on investment.

The census bureau claims 41.6% in 2015. Not sure if this includes Medicaid or not.
